Grandparents, if you’re still looking for ways to tell your granddaughters or grandsons how you feel and how much they has meant to you, we suggest you use some verses from our sweet and joyful poems about grandchildren to do that.
All grandchildren must hold an irreplaceable place in a grandparent’s heart. The bond shared between a grandparent and grandchildren is profound as grandchildren see grandparents as their “bodyguards” or “protectors”. They can turn to you during stressful times at home. You are their “safe place” whenever they need somewhere to stay or their wise “buddies” that they need to ask advice and encouragement from. As time goes by, grandchildren become a big and special part of your life, especially when you reach an older age. Thus, a sweet and joyful poem about grandchildren is a small but beautiful gift to give your grandchild. Your granddaughter or grandson will cherish it very much and carry on the appreciation for many years.
Below are our chosen verses with sweet and joyful poems about grandchildren. You can pick out what fits your grandchildren the most or even customize it to match how you want it to be. We guarantee your grandchildren will feel blissful, impressed and heartfelt when receiving it.
1, Granddaughters © Joy Harjo
I was a thought, a dream, a fish, a wing
And then a human being
When I emerged from my mother’s river
On my father’s boat of potent fever
I carried a sack of dreams from a starlit dwelling
To be opened when I begin bleeding
There’s a red dress, deerskin moccasins
The taste of berries made of promises
While the memories shift in their skins
At every moon, to do their ripening
2, To My Grandchildren © Stephanie Fausnacht
When the house is finally quiet
And you’re all snuggled in your bed
I sit alone at night
And think of all I’ve said
I may have said some things
Because some days I am so sad
But I need you to know my dear grandchildren
That it is not toward you that I am mad
I love you more than life itself
More than the air I breathe
My role to love you as a grandmother should
Was stolen away from me.
I struggle with the anger
The Hallmark story that will never be
The loss of the role to spoil you both
To be the actual grandma you will likely never see
I may mourn the life that was supposed to be mine
But I will never regret my choice
To raise, love and teach you both
To give you each a voice
My Love for you has no bounds
In the daily rat race it may sometimes not show
But know this my dear grandchildren
I will be by your side wherever you may go.
God has given you to me for a reason
& I will always worry if I’m doing enough
No one said this would be easy
The problems of Today can be so tough.
But I promise to be here for you always
In the good times & the bad
Just be patient with me my little ones
As I put aside this role of grandma
to try and be both your Mom & Dad
Now that you are here, I will never let go
You have a hold on me that I cannot understand
Have faith in me and in God and
Together we will walk this journey hand in hand

4, The Little Red Rocker © Laurie E. Dawson
The little red rocker was just the right size
To rock her baby doll that had sleepy eyes;
She sang lullabies and crooned soft and low
To the land of sweet dreams where sleepy dolls go.
The little girl soon outgrew the red chair,
The years seemed to fly that we had to share;
Then one day she left for her home that was new
Leaving behind the sleepy doll too.
Years later at Christmas she came for a stay
To visit Grandmother and make her heart gay.
She brought her little girl who was bonny and fair
And just the right size for the red rocking chair.
Then grandmother came with the doll from the shelf
To place in her arms, so the lassie herself
Could sing lullabies and croon soft and low
To the land of sweet dreams where sleepy dolls go.

Child of my child,
Heart of my heart,
Your smile bridges the years between us–
I am young again discovering the world
through your eyes.
You have the time to listen
And I have the time to spend.
Delighted to gaze at familiar,
loved features, made new in you again.
Through you, I’ll see the future
Through me, you’ll know the past
In the present we’ll love one another
As long as these moments last.

6, The Joys of Being a Grandparent © Anonymous
Telling stories, buying ice cream, playing silly games,
Hugging, kissing, tickling, giggling, making up fun names.
Going fishing, baby-sitting, tucking in at night,
Dreaming, reading, make-believing, holding hands real tight.
Having picnics, watching movies, buying toys and things–
These are just a few of the joys that being a Grandparent brings!

I’ve seen the lights of Paris
I’ve seen the lights of Rome
But the greatest lights I’ve ever seen
Are the tail lights of my children’s car
Taking my grandkids home.
8, Motherhood’s Reward © Anonymous
She rocks another baby . . .
hums an age-old lullaby.
She hopes no one is watching
as with thanks, she starts to cry.
Remembering the time
when the babies were her own,
And her mother told her gently
too soon they would be grown.
Lots of bedtime stories,
skinned knees, and tears to dry,
Teddy bears, toy trucks and dolls
and kites up in the sky.
First days of school, first loves, first cars,
the proms, the wedding days,
Sand castles and snowball fights
and teaching them to pray.
Now, as she holds her grandchild
and gives thanks unto the Lord,
She knows to be a grandma
is motherhood’s reward!
9, Fun With Grandkids © Catherine Pulsifer
Grandma cooks and bakes her treats,
Grandpa knows just what to do;
He’ll find a project or two,
And fun with grandkids ensues.
Blowing bubbles and playing hide-n-seek,
Building forts out of Grandpa’s sheet;
Grandma’s stories surely will peak,
We love the stories that she speaks.
Racing against the clock with Grandpa,
Hitting high notes with Grandma;
Laughing, shouting, and having fun
There is no other day that compares to this one!
10, Such Joy © Catherine Pulsifer
Grandchildren bring such joy
It doesn’t matter if a girl or a boy.
They add life happiness
With every little hug and kiss.
They make you laugh and sing
Oh, such joy they do bring.
To see a smile on their face
To them, you want to embrace.
They are a gift from God above
They bring into our lives much love
Count my blessings every day
For these children in every way.
11, Such A Blessing © Catherine Pulsifer
Grandchildren, such a blessing in every way,
Sparking life and joy each and every day.
Much laughter and joy to have them around,
Our youth from the past we think we’ve found.
Time spent with our grandchildren is always too short,
Except on days that are filled with sports..
Memories made of days gone by come back alive,
So much love is shown when grandkids arrive.
12, Chaos © Marie Matheny
Getting the grandkids
For the weekend
Starts out sweet and calm
Soon it turns to chaos
As time lingers on
Sleep deprivation
Too many sweets
Turns to aggravation
Between them and me
They play good for five minutes
Then argue for twenty
As the day wears on
It never is too pretty
My patience goes out the window
I’m yelling at both of them
They are crying and fighting
Total chaos to the end
I tell myself
After it’s done and over
It’ll be a long while
Before I have them over
But one weekend comes and goes
I forget the chaos and then
Before I know what I have done
They’re back with me again
It’s a never-ending cycle
Coming to Nana’s on weekends
This chaos and confusion
I fear will someday end
Love, love my grandkids
Love them to the core
Love the chaos and confusion
And the memories even more…
13, Attached As Could Be © Claudia Lee
Just a baby girl
Attached as could be
You showed me the world
Through my curiosity
When we were together
Attached as could be
These are the things
You showed me…
The moon in the sky
The stars up above
This is the way
You showed your love…
Sunshine and flowers
Butterflies and bees
A bird in the air
A squirrel in a tree
You carried me here
You carried me there
You showed me your world
So willing to share
Attached we were
Attached as could be
When I was with you
And you with me
You called me your angel
Sent from above
Our attachment in life
An expression of love
Now you are gone
I still don’t know why
But I feel you
I know you’re close by
I’ve gotten older
The years speed away
My love for you
It’s here to stay
I am with you
And you with me
My Guardian Angel
Attached as could be

By the time you read this, you will be a big boy.
I know you will be kind, funny, wise, sensitive, interesting, and a ball of fire!
Your parents are all of these things.
I know you will be strong and a wonderful hugger.
Your father was and still is.
I wish you happy, happy, days! You will have some bad days, yes.
They are important so you can appreciate the good ones.
There will be disappointments; I know you will be able to handle them.
Granny always says, “Life is 10% of what happens and 90% how you handle it.”
I pray you learn about humility.
Please always let an outsider feel inside, and always, always be kind.
I hope you learn that honesty is the best policy,
And that doing a hard day’s work will always make you feel better.
Be a loyal friend, one people can count on and trust.
I hope you put all of these wonderful things you possess
To make yourself and the world around you a better place to live in.
Please learn about the “God Stuff;” it really works, trust me.
You have such a wonderful mother.
She will be the one to teach you all the good things in life.
Remember how to play, for you are in for a loving time.
I hope we will be close always.
I can’t wait to see you. I love you already.
15, The Love of a Grandchild © Anonymous
Grandchildren, a gift from above,
Sent to bring joy and fill hearts with love.
With every smile and every embrace,
They light up our lives and leave a lasting trace.
Their love is pure, their hearts are true,
They bring a special kind of joy, anew.
With tiny hands and curious eyes,
They remind us to cherish every moment and not despise.
They are the ones who call us “Grandma” and “Grandpa”,
And they make our hearts swell with pride and rapture.
With their laughter and their hugs,
They fill our days with warmth and love.
The bond between grandparent and grandchild,
Is a treasure that is priceless and mild.
It is a connection that cannot be broken,
A love that is forever spoken.
They teach us to see the world with fresh eyes,
To appreciate the simple things and not to despise.
With their innocence and their trust,
They remind us of what truly matters, just.
They bring light to our days and warmth to our hearts,
Their love is a treasure, a priceless work of art.
With every milestone, every new step,
We are there to guide and support, with love that is kept.
Grandchildren, a gift that keeps giving,
With every moment shared, a new memory is living.
Their love is pure, their hearts are true,
Forever a part of our hearts, anew.

There’s someone knocking at my door
Then little feet across my floor
I wonder then
Who can it be?
It’s my grandson who has come to visit me
He talks to me (in double Dutch)
Of this and that
And such and such
My little grandson is only two
With hair of gold
And eyes of blue
17, A Bundle of Love © Robert Beau
I stood there just looking around
There was no music, hardly heard a sound.
On the other side of the glass, I saw you there
You were so cute; you did not have much hair.
Sure there were others but it didn’t matter to me
They were not as pretty; it was you I came to see.
They brought you to the window so near
I fought to hold back the tear.
You had your mother’s eyes we all knew
They were sparkling and so blue.
A grin appeared, it might be gas
But I did not care; you were such a pretty lass.
Although your parent I may not be
Hopefully you’ll spend some time with me.
You see grandparents have a special role
They are in charge of the baby’s soul.
18, For a Daughter © Anonymous
You used to wake us in the night,
Your childish needs to fill–
A drink, a swift assurance
Your fears to still.
Then came the times we lay awake
Waiting the moment you came in,
You still seemed like the little girl
That you had been.
Now you are gone we often wake
And ache for years so swiftly fled,
And sometimes go and stand beside
Your empty bed.
Yet seeing small and lovely ones
With your same eyes
We sleep, Aware that neither one
Would have it otherwise.

Sometimes I really do wonder,
Why they are called grand?
Then I know a loving grandmother
Can always fully understand.
You get that important phone call
You have waited for so long,
Excitement really kicks in,
As you arrive and rush down the hall.
You see that precious baby,
Gender really doesn’t matter at all.
It brings back many memories
Of when your children were so small.
You congratulate the parents,
As you see mother and baby are okay.
You know without a doubt,
This was done in God’s own way.
Many sacrifices made along the way,
Are very much worthwhile.
When you see that sweet little face
And that bright cheery smile.
Time rocks on as they grow and grow,
Then comes their future, rushing to and fro,
They will always be our babies,
If anyone should ask.
They are all very special,
From the first one to the last!

I hope to leave a legacy
Of love and truth and caring
Who has your hopes and dreams at heart
Someone who’s good at sharing
You make my life much richer
Even when you’re out of sight
To hear what makes you happy
Also makes my days so bright
And when you’re sad I too am sad
I want to make things right
Until you are grandparents
You’ll never, ever know
How grandkids enrich our lives
And set our hearts aglow
We could not love you more than this
But this of course you know.
21, To My Great Grandchildren © Kurt Philip Behm
To my Grandchildren, those great and beyond,
whom I will never meet
Know that I love you and have seen you in the
eyes of your parents when they were very small
I’ve heard your voices in the trees, when the
wind blows softly calling my name as I walk
I’ve seen your arms reaching out to me in my
dreams, as you cry “Papa” and then drift away
Your spirit is mine, as my spirit is yours; and no
lifetime can keep us apart
I watch over you now and will watch over you then,
whenever the need is great
I’m that voice you hear when no one else listens, and
no one else understands
And the heart that feels what you will feel, when no
one else seems to care

Oh button, don’t go thinking we loved pianos
more than elephants, air conditioning more than air.
We loved honey, just loved it, and went into stores
to smell the sweet perfume of unworn leather shoes.
Did you know, on the coast of Africa, the Sea Rose
and Carpenter Bee used to depend on each other?
The petals only opened for the Middle C their wings
beat, so in the end, we protested with tuning forks.
You must think we hated the stars, the empty ladles,
because they conjured thirst. We didn’t. We thanked
them and called them lucky, we even bought the rights
to name them for our sweethearts. Believe it or not,
most people kept plants like pets and hired kids
like you to water them, whenever they went away.
And ice! Can you imagine? We put it in our coffee
and dumped it out at traffic lights, when it plugged up
our drinking straws. I had a dog once, a real dog,
who ate venison and golden yams from a plastic dish.
He was stubborn, but I taught him to dance and play
dead with a bucket full of chicken livers. And we danced
too, you know, at weddings and wakes, in basements
and churches, even when the war was on. Our cars
we mostly named for animals, and sometimes we drove
just to drive, to clear our heads of everything but wind.

“Just happen to have them with me . . . ”
This is what I say.
But when you come down to it,
I plan it just that way!
Just happen to have the pictures
Of my sweet grandchildren here–
I like it when folks say, “He’s cute,”
Or, “Isn’t she a dear?”
Grandparents keep these photographs
And show them near and far . . .
Their pride is understandable–
That’s how grandparents are!
