The young Haydn was still working out his style,
whether to put an ‘and’ between the last two items in a list,
but that had nothing to do with leaving Kingston.
That belongs to the story of the first deep-sea diver
to use a leaden helmet as ballast.
History does not record his neck problems,
but I did tell him I know someone who wanted some crabs on a regular basis
and it was whether I act as the middleman
and make a little out of the deal for myself,
or give him the fellow’s web address
and wipe my hands of the matter
that I was considering
when it struck me there might be a poem in it
and I put the light on
and wrote it down
opting, from the middle to the end, for ‘and’ in a big way.
