For what reason did I allow
Them two by two up the plank,
All attractive except those
Who could think
By day, by night
For the mongoose forty days
Was just another snake,
The giraffe wavered with the swell
And danced with the shrike
By day, by night
The erect one tended to his tool
And the semen’s smell on his hand
Promised him orange blossoms
And dry land
By day, by night
Of the fouled rushes in the hold
The top-heavy one
Wove a hat and wore it
To keep off the sun
By day, by night
What they got in the end
Was a place to be loose;
Only one kind thought it becoming
To be verbose
By day, by night
The mole is free in his tunnels
The bee in his comb,
But that other cages himself
With his vaunted names
By day, by night
For what reason did I allow
Them two by two down the plank,
All worth the wonder
But those who could think
By day, by night
