No, spare those Saxons.
Come Domesday
Every man’s a potential tax payer,
Declared William,
Using his ready reckoner,
As the battle swung in his favour
Thanks to the enemy’s rash blunder.
He had to recover the expedition’s
Initial outlay and the rewards
Promised to his knights in shining armour,
Grants of land (Titles are much cheaper)
Risk taker William
Still with the mind of a banker!
As twilight came some of his knights
Were lost in a fosse
But that didn’t matter
It was too late for the Saxons to recover
And saved him a pretty penny
Into the bargain.
Yes, it had been a good day out
Despite that initial stumbling!
