I should have brought some walnuts to the park,
For you’re the cutest squirrel in all New York,
And I’m another Ebenezer Scrooge.
Your need’s so small, and my means must seem huge.
I love the way you leap up on the bench
And look me in the eye, the way you clench
Your dainty paw and press it to your chest,
As though to say, “Dear Sir, might I be blessed
By your largesse? Tonight is Christmas Eve!”
O Squirrel, don’t go away. You must believe
I’ll be right back with something good to eat.
The nuts I give to you make Christmas sweet.
