A strange occurrence I thought… a hole
dug deep into the subterranean darkness
No doubt by a creature with great talent…
leaving conformation of unique aptness
What a dastardly deed you have done
by digging into my manicured lawn
I want to scold you and tell you
that you were wrong… but now you’re gone
Standing back… within running distance
debating… should I seal the hole with concrete
or flood the underground canal with a hose…
deciding to unobtrusively make a retreat
Envisioning the culprit… was it a big brown rat
or a smelly skunk… or giant slithering snake…
Maybe it was a grumpy groundhog… perhaps
whatever did the digging deserves a break
I am residing in the country where nature reigns
I should not question any ulterior intentions
Whatever it was… it displayed earthy instincts
I’ll just allow the tunnel stay without intervention
Maybe one day the unnamed doer will appear
and reveal the mysterious features of its face
Nevertheless, I will continue to avoid intruding
I’ll mow around and give it some personal space
