One day he loses everything.
Not a fire, not confiscation.
He simply can’t remember
where he put them.
His shirts hang loose without cufflinks.
His car door is locked forever.
American Express sends huge bills
for things he does not possess.
His children are waiting
to be picked up in towns
whose names he can’t recall.
He walks into class with his fly open
and does not even remember
to be embarrassed.
Well, he says, well well.
Suddenly he remembers that it is
not important to remember.
He laughs and laughs.
