.
loaded onto carts, loaded into railroad cars
loaded onto trucks, loaded into vans
loaded onto livestock trucks, loaded into boats
we are the poor, we are the unwanted
.
loaded onto old conveyances with the last money we have
or walking through the dust of ages to knock upon your door
with all our earthly possessions
that we can carry on our backs, in our arms
.
food stuffed into bags, food stuffed into pockets
wearing layer after layer
of our clothing
so we can carry more
.
we are so crowded together
we cannot lie down
there will be no sleep nor rest for the likes of us
squeezed together like sheep
.
we carry our children
in our weary arms
we watch over their pale little faces
dark circles under their eyes
.
they weigh so little
with their toothpick arms and legs
please do not mind them, they do not take up much room
please do not mind them, they do not eat so much
.
we are heavy laden, we bear many sorrows
our burdens are many, we yearn to put them down
for strength we can only lean against each other
and hold each other up
.
we stand silently jammed together
as we pass through the night
loaded into train cars
loaded into box cars
.
loaded into steerage
loaded in the backs of moving vans
we are the travelers, we are the emigrants
we are the poor, we are the unwanted
.
