You didn’t get to select your parents
Or choose your circumstances
Perhaps Life dealt you a bad hand
Or you had more than your share of pain
You may have added to the problem
By your reactions to the unfairness
By acting out, in self-destruction,
You failed the sought relief to gain.
But you can yet rise from the ashes
And overcome, and finish strong,
And do good with the life you’re given
And not perpetuate the wrong.
You have more say-so than you think
A victim or a victor to be
Your past is not your future,
You’re free to choose your destiny.
