The fog was thick as cars piled up,
There in the wreckage people died.
In one, the sad remains were found;
Where man and dog lay side by side.
And so, in time, the two turned up
And gently knocked on heaven’s door.
St Peter checked the rolls and said,
“An honest man and kind, but poor,
“You’ve led a humble, Christian life,”
The pearly gates swung open wide.
“You’re welcome, but we don’t take pets
So please, just leave dog outside.”
The man turned round to pat his dog
He sadly shed a salty tear
“Come on,” he said, “we’ll try downstairs,
It’s plain we are not wanted here.”
They turned to go, but Peter called,
“Sometimes our rules do go amiss!
To turn from heaven for a dog,
Can there be greater love than this?
“We’ll make a place for both of you,
Your entry here can’t be denied.”
So, with a smile and wagging tail,
They entered heaven, side by side.
