The light that enters
not a definition
Against the light
your polite uncertainty keeps asking questions which
can be answered obliquely:
your innocence demands, almost, no definition,
edges us to those areas where no
syntax or other act can be direct
The other is a warm-hearted fool
and very likeable
Against your murmuring silence he puts
a graceful chatter,
disgracefully entertaining, entertains
his hangover, takes
what is his due, the stranger’s gift
black bread and chowder, our hot spiced liquors
But you
eat and drink in silence . No one knows
what ghost you feed
Against his clumsy warmth you lay
(the light fading behind you
a distant politesse, an ambiguity
which does not answer our hospitality
tho it is you we greet.
