A feline fairy-godmother passed by
When I was born, and paused to wish on me
The gifts that cats esteem: a questing eye
A solitary mien, the need to be
At all times independent. So I grew
To feature these and other feline traits;
A little wary, save with those I knew,
Pursuant only of my own sweet ways.
Yet, deep within my heart, I’ve come to know
A need that can’t be satisfied alone;
I’d rather share love’s heat with you than go
Forever in cool safety on my own.
And cats enjoy the fireside, so I’m told,
When, finally, they come in from the cold.
