‘Twas back in the ’80’s, yet still plain as day
First Holy Communion – the month it was May,
The day before Sunday and time to give prayers
The priest in his study, the boys in their chairs,
One came up missing – nowhere to be found,
Then out in the hallway a clatter of sound –
One little boy running as cleats hit the ground
In Little League uniform, late for his game,
Tossing his glove through the doorway he came –
Slid to his chair like he’d slid to home base
The priest had to wipe off the grin on his face;
All the boys seated in slacks, shirts and ties
Followed his entrance with wide startled eyes –
‘I’m sorry I’m late, sir, ‘ he started to say,
‘You know that it’s Little League’s opening day
And I have to be there as soon as I’m done –
Church before baseball – I need a homerun! ‘
My son is now grown to a happy young man –
But he still causes drama whenever he can.
He’ll never fit into the usual flow –
And people just love him wherever he goes!
