Old Shen came roaring into town,
the cops hot on his tail.
He ditched his pick-up in the hay
and hid behind a bale.
The night was dark; there was no moon,
or he could not escape.
The shadows were just dark enough
to hide his bulky shape.
Then later when he had a chance
he got into his car
and drove around our little town.
His luck held out so far!
They never found out who he was;
those cops were just too late.
They never could get close enough
to read his license plate!
I never did know anyone
who liked to drive so fast!
If his wife knew the things he’d done,
she would have been aghast.
I held on to his bumper once;
a stupid thing to do!
He dragged me through a gravel patch
and left me black and blue.
I had small pebbles in my chest,
imbedded by the score.
For many days I had to rest,
and I was very sore!
I learned my lesson well that day,
and thankful that I did.
I never should have been so dumb,
but I was just a kid!
