Girls were off limits.
At the school pool I could look but not touch.
In undergraduate days still interested
but very, very careful.
The passion was writing.
First there was the student newspaper.
Next a column “School Notes” in the small town weekly.
Then letters in the small city daily.
More letters in the big city daily.
Culminating in a letter quoted by Joe Kaslow
in The New York Herald Tribune and two lines extorted
from Edith Wharton at Newsweek that gave a credit.
A lot of huff and puff before graduating from high school
but the passion had to go somewhere
and girls were off limits.
