The modern consumer is undaunted by the complexity of things.
He or She will phone the store and drive a car and gaze at TV,
Without a twinge of guilt about their total incomprehension
Of the machine marvels they switch on or off. This ignorance
Is a sort of armour against Faustian madness in their lives.
They are impervious to Mephistopheles, who cannot
Lure them with pleasures of the flesh or pride of victory.
They win the wager against devil.
