Rider Haggard hit on a powerful myth in ‘She’,
The immortal who ‘Must-be-obeyed’.
She ages two thousand years in seconds,
Unsinged by the Fire. Such a story of adventure,
Must be born in enduring Imagination
If it is archetypal of a recurrent dream,
A sequence perhaps Angst-ridden, but a tale
Without a plot, a sense of shared vision,
Like the Greek myth of Cupid and Psyche.
That is the solace of ‘We are not alone’.
Simplify the pointillism in Life’s complexity.
If modern art is a metaphor, I choose
The hazy Impressionist.
