The watchman walks his key
to stations of his round
and turns off each alarm.
The flashlight plays on shapes
of martial night-machines
and cases of grenades
stacked up for use awake,
and on the office wall
among the mountainous charts,
the gilt-framed masterpiece:
Love as Child with Darts.
