1, My Hero © Neftalie Joyce
I had a friend
I call him Panda
He was my dog
Given by my grandpa
Whenever I feel sad
My dog was always there
He always understand
That I was full of fear
When my grandpa was dying
My dog saw me crying
He tried to offer a hug while watching me weeping
He waits for me, he never leave me hanging.
February five 2022
My hero died because of me
I almost had an accident
But he risked his life for me.
I didn’t notice the motorcycle behind my back
I was walking without knowing the right direction and path
I still can hear the bark of my dog as I reminisce the past
I would never forgive myself about what happened last month
It breaks my heart
It pains me so much
I don’t even know how to start
And to continue this life
My dog died because of me
Because of my stupidity
God, I wish it was me
But it’s too late already.
2, Memories are Golden © Dog Poems
They say memories are golden.
Well, maybe that is true.
I never wanted memories
I only wanted you.
A million times I needed you,
A million times I cried.
If love alone could have saved you,
You never would have died.
In life I loved you dearly,
In death I love you still.
In my heart you hold a place
No one could ever fill.
If tears could build a stairway,
And heartache make a lane.
I’d walk the path to heaven,
And bring you home again.
Our family chain is broken,
And nothing seems the same.
But as God calls us one by one,
The chain will link again.
3, Puppy Paws © Michelle N. Lightner
Fifteen years of puppy paws moved outside today.
Inside my heart is breaking,
the Light of my Life – Missy, has gone away.
I held her head, kissed her blurry eyes, and said “I Love You, Girl”
With gentle hands and heavy heart, I released her soul to God,
crying for her spirit to be free.
Never dreamed it would hurt so much,
Guess I wasn’t thinking much of Me.
But she must be missing something,
she left her paws upon my heart.
Kind reminders of the time we had together,
I never wanted her to be the first to part.
They tug as fiercely as the shoestrings she once played with;
the tug of wars together, the one’s I let her win.
The “tennies”, the toys, all the things she loved speak about her passing
and I fall apart again.
Those little puppy “grunts” and kisses seem so far away.
I cry: “What was I thinking?
I said it’d be OK.”
I said; “I’ll be alright without you, If you really have to go.
No need for you to fret or worry,
we had our chance to love each other so.”
Our final road together remains yet to be seen.
Puppy paws can be so gentle,
the pain they leave in passing, so mean.
“I’ll hold them safely in my heart”, I tell Her;
“but I’ll let them run at will.
When we cross the Bridge together,
I know they will be still.”
4, Our Dog © Curtis Raynard
We had our dog for 9 years
And had to put her down
It caused us a lot of tears
Which made our hearts frown
That was a year ago
And we still miss her so
She was a friendly soul
That had an important role
And it’s been hard to let her go
If you ever have a dog
You’ll learn how hard it was
If you ever had a dog
You know just Because
She was our companion
She was our best friend
But she grew as big as a canyon
Which caused her spine to bend
Making the right choice
Sometimes feels so wrong
But now we must rejoice
For now her pain is gone
We still miss your tail wave in
And we hope your doing fine
We will Always love you Raven
Until the end of time
5, Poem Of A Dog © The Paw Patch
I am the one who always waits for you.
Your car has a special sound that I
have imprinted on my senses, I can
recognize it among a thousand.
Your steps have a magic timbre.
Your voice is music to my ears.
If I see your joy, it makes me happy!
Your scent is the best,
Your presence is what moves my
senses.
Your awakening wakes me up.
I watch you sleep and for me you are my God, I am happy watching over your sleep.
Your gaze is a ray of light. Your hands on me have the lightness of peace and the sublime display of infinite love.
When you go out, I feel a huge emptiness in my heart.
I wait for you again and again.
I am the one who will wait for you all my life today, tomorrow and always:
I am your dog
6, Puppy Poem © Lisa Van Der Wielen
Pick me, pick me,
I really want a home.
I promise to follow you,
wherever you roam.
I might bark at the postman,
or chew your socks,
I might even dig holes,
or ruin my box.
I might fetch my lead,
and beg for a walk,
When you’re eating food,
I’ll watch like a hawk.
If you take me home,
and cuddle me with pride,
I promise to love you,
and be by your side.
For I might be cheeky,
and act like I’m royal,
But I’m playful, affectionate,
and extremely loyal.
I’m devoted, adoring,
and very smart,
If you give me a home,
I’ll give you my heart.
7, Dogs © Marchette Chute
The dogs I know
Have many shapes.
For some are big and tall,
And some are long,
And some are thin,
And some are fat and small.
And some are little bits of fluff
And have no shape at all.
8, Man’s Best Friend © William Thomas Fearby
Dogs not just for Christmas
I once heard someone say
A dog’s mans best friend
Not something to throw away
A dog is always loving
They never leave your side
Unlike you and me
Their feelings they never hide
We all have our good days
As well as our bad
But a dog’s always there for you
To help when we are feeling sad
They give you unconditional love
They never treat you any other way
No matter how you treat them
They never turn away
Why do we treat our best friend so bad?
We beat them and then we leave them to die
Where is your compassion don’t’ you have a heart
Your callous actions just make me want to cry
Every hour every day a dog is thrown out
Is this world for me, I very much doubt
How can you live with a race so unkind?
Are we all stupid or are we all blind
Stop hurting and killing our best friend
All this violent abuse must come to an end
Don’t have a dog think right from the start
Leave it to somebody else, someone with a heart
Remember a dog’s not just for Christmas
It’s for the rest of their days
So cherish and love them forever
And make others change their ways
9, Unsatisfied Yearning © R. K. Munkittrick
Down in the silent hallway
Scampers the dog about,
And whines, and barks, and scratches,
In order to get out.
Once in the glittering starlight.
He straightway doth begin
To set up a doleful howling
In order to get in.
10, The Doggies Promenade © Anonymous
Three dogs went out for a promenade
All on a summer’s day;
There was Mr. Dog, and Mrs. Dog,
And little Doggie Tray.
And as they walked down the crowded street,
They were proud as proud could be,
For they were dressed in their very best,
As every one could see.
But a mischievous cat on the sidewalk stood,
No coat, no hat had she;
So she laughed at the dress and the pompousness
Of the dog and his family.
Mr. Dog growled deep, and sprang at the cat,
And chased her up and down,
With an angry cry, and a flashing eye,
Throughout the wondering town.
But he tripped in his haste against a stone,
And fell in the slippery street,
And when he arose, lo! his stylish clothes
Were mud from head to feet.
And Mrs. Dog, when she saw his plight,
With horror swooned away,
And sank right down, with her silken gown,
On a heap of soft red clay.
Wee Baby Dog was in sad distress;
He sought for his cap in vain;
His kilt was torn, he was all forlorn,
And his tears fell down like rain.
But the roguish cat at her fireside sat,
And thought of her fun that day;
And she jumped and danced, and purred and pranced,
At the doggies running away.
11, There Was a Little Dog © Anonymous
There was a little dog and he had a little tail
And he used to wag, wag, wag it!
But when he was sad, because he had been bad,
On the ground he would drag, drag, drag it!
12, Good Bye Ludwig © Don Miller Sr
My poem is about Ludwig
Sounds German like the composer
But he was a dog
Who wandered away from home
A dog is smarter than you think
Knows if someone dislikes him
Probably even smells it
Growls when he’s around
Out the other day
With his best friend
A dog like him
Having a good old time
Frolicking around
Lost direction a wee bit
Wandered in the yard next door
When they saw him
Him was an important man
His wife the president of their town
Happened to see Ludwig
They, I mean were on his property
Just so happened had a gun
Was a pretty good shot
As he took aim
Good bye Ludwig
13, Triggering Memories © Robert Broadbent
You hear a song, from long ago,
That for years you haven’t heard,
You’ll tap your feet, let the rhythm flow,
And remember every word.
The scent from the simple daffodil,
Bluebells in a jar,
Brasses on the windowsill,
Bring thoughts of old grandma.
Watching grand-kids on the slide,
A walk through the local wood,
Day-trips to the old seaside,
Recall your own childhood.
Black and white films on TV,
Where the bad guys never win,
Reignite the memory,
Of shows like Rin Tin Tin.
Old photos of the things long gone,
Like a pet dog or a cat,
And the street we all played on,
“How well we remember that,”
Time it slowly drifts away,
Like the tide or a gentle breeze,
But in our hearts will always stay,
Those happy memories.
14, Music On All Fours © Josephine Pollard
A Pussy-cat and a Black-and-Tan
Were shut in a room together,
And, after a season of quiet, began
To talk of the change in the weather,
And new spring fashions, and after that
They had a sort of musical chat.
Said Puss: “To me it is quite absurd—
But tastes and opinions vary;
And some have declared that no beast or bird
Can sing like the small canary,—
Who, if it be true as I’ve heard it told,
Is really worth more than its weight in gold!”
Said the Black-and-Tan, with a pensive smile:
“I’ve wanted to call attention
To this bit of scandal for quite a while,
And, if not amiss, to mention
That my daily allowance of bark and whine
Has greatly improved this voice of mine.”
“It has,” said Puss, with a comic grin;
“The words of truth you have spoken;
A name for ourselves we must strive to win
At once, now the ice is broken;
For one or two doses of catnip tea
Have had a wondrous effect on me!
“‘Twas only the other night I strayed
Where a silvery moonbeam slanted,
And gave such a beautiful serenade
You’d have thought the place enchanted.
It roused the neighborhood to a pitch
Of praise, or envy—I can’t tell which.”
Said the Black-and-Tan, “Why shouldn’t we try
To sing a duet together?”
Said the Puss, “I see no reason why
We can’t; and we’ll show them whether
To birds and bipeds alone belong
The gift of singing a pleasing song!”
They sang—and they sang; but oh, my dears!
If you had been anywhere near them,
You’d have shut your eyes and stopped your ears,
And wished that you couldn’t hear them.
‘Twas a brilliant effort, upon my word,
And nearly killed the canary-bird.
The Pussy-cat and the Black-and-Tan
With the music were so delighted,
They will give a concert as soon as they can,
And perhaps we may be invited.
“Bow-wow!” “Miaow!” I’m sorry, you know,
I’ve another engagement—and cannot go!
15, My Brindle Bull-Terrier © Coletta Ryan
My brindle bull-terrier, loving and wise,
With his little screw-tail and his wonderful eyes,
With his white little breast and his white little paws
Which, alas! he mistakes very often for claws;
With his sad little gait as he comes from the fight
When he feels that he hasn’t done all that he might;
Oh, so fearless of man, yet afraid of a frog,
My near little, queer little, dear little dog!
He shivers and shivers and shakes with the cold;
He huddles and cuddles, though three summers old.
And forsaking the sunshine, endeavors to rove
With his cold little worriments under the stove!
At table, his majesty, dying formeat,—
Yet never despising a lump that is sweet,—
Sits close by my side with his head on my knee
And steals every good resolution from me!
How can I withhold from those worshipping eyes
A small bit of something that stealthily flies
Down under the table and into his mouth
As I tell my dear neighbor of life in the South.
My near little, queer little, dear little dog,
So fearless of man, yet afraid of a frog!
The nearest and queerest and dearest of all
The race that is loving and winning and small;
The sweetest, most faithful, the truest and best
Dispenser of merriment, love and unrest!
16, Windows In Heaven © Anonymous
It’s my first day in Heaven and what a beautiful place.
You’ll be glad to know there’s a smile upon my face.
The moment I left you, two angels in white
carried me up here to Heaven that night.
All those stories you hear about Rainbow Bridge are true,
but you don’t walk over it, the angels carried me through.
There’s a gate at the end made of real pearl.
It must be the biggest gate in the world!
Once I got in and started looking around,
you just won’t believe all the things that I found!
The first place they took me had to be the most fun,
a humongous field with miles and miles to run!
Once I was tired, the angels said, “We’ll take you to your home,
but first, we need to stop by this place, full of tasty bones.”
They told me to take some with me, but one is all I need.
Because every good thing lasts forever, up in heaven, you see.
They took me to my new house. It took my breath away.
The most beautiful place I’ve ever seen with a huge yard in which to play.
They said, “Come on, let’s go inside and have a look around”.
They took me to the bottom floor. You won’t believe what I found!
The bottom of my house is a window and you won’t believe the view.
You see my house sits right over yours, so I can still keep an eye on you!
So, the next time you are missing me, this is what you do;
Step outside and look straight up, because I still have my eye on YOU!
17, The Umbrellaed Dog © Tshering Wangchuk
People seeked shelter in the town,
As the rain mercilessly poured down.
The poor soul couldn’t find a shelter,
Life for him seemed a disaster.
He shivered with cold in the rain,
No one seemed to share his pain.
The rain never stopped falling,
For help, his face was calling.
There came a man with an umbrella,
Seemed to have a heart of Mandela.
He sensed the terrible pinch of pain,
Looked at the dog again and again.
The umbrella was small and cute,
His action made the onlookers mute.
Let himself drenched but not the dog,
The dog’s pleased, he looked a mucky log.
He placed the umbrella over the poor,
People frowned and grinned at the doer.
Some thought him to be funny,
But his heart was strong and sunny.
18, My Dog and I © Dan Rapposelli
We’re all tucked away on this glorious day
You might think I’m wasting it away
But I’m tired you know , I’ve fixed a lot
My life was just one big knot
So if I lay for a day or a week
Have no thought , its mine to seek .
I’m trying not to pine over days of old
But sometimes you know , my heart feels cold .
So I grab my blanket and tuck in my dog
Forgive me , I just came out of the fog
19, A Boy And His Dog © Edgar Albert Guest
A boy and his dog make a glorious pair:
No better friendship is found anywhere,
For they talk and they walk and they run and they play,
And they have their deep secrets for many a day;
And that boy has a comrade who thinks and who feels,
Who walks down the road with a dog at his heels.
He may go where he will and his dog will be there,
May revel in mud and his dog will not care;
Faithful he’ll stay for the slightest command
And bark with delight at the touch of his hand;
Oh, he owns a treasure which nobody steals,
Who walks down the road with a dog at his heels.
No other can lure him away from his side;
He’s proof against riches and station and pride;
Fine dress does not charm him, and flattery’s breath
Is lost on the dog, for he’s faithful to death;
He sees the great soul which the body conceals—
Oh, it’s great to be young with a dog at your heels!
20, Dogging His Steps © Amos R. Wells
‘To dog his steps’- there’s libel in the phrase,
A slander on the faithful doggish ways.
By it men mean to follow like a thief,
To tremble at the crackling of a leaf,
To crawl and sneak, to spy and wait and gloat.
And hide a dagger ready for a throat.
No, no! To ‘dog his steps’ is to pursue
With endless loyalty and purpose true;
To leap with love and eagerness and joy,
Be ready for the heartiest emply;
To worship him as if he were a god,
And follow every step that he has trod;
To hang upon his whistle or a word;
To skim along as happy as a bird;
With shining eyes and with a heart of cheer
To be a comrade and a friend sincere;
That-never mind what stupid men may say-
That is to ‘dog his steps’ the doggish way!
