Each season, because we
snag fingerlings first,
gulping for anything,
we learn there’s a limit
to water. Trout
try to starve.
They believe
the eye is quicker
than the wrist,
and live by choosing.
In August, hoisting a fat
brown trout to the creel,
we say it’s skill
but know it’s hunger
and blind luck.
