Silent And Mournful

Distrust is a disease of a broken soul.
All of your neighbors are in need
and yet you feel they’re all conmen
and conniving women.

Empathetic emotion is impossible to nurture
gazing behind your back
for the next assault
or possible knife attack.

I wish I was still a child
riding bikes on a summer street
not knowing the difference between
a business tycoon and a homeless man
but reserving a smile for each.

The decades have disappeared like a dream
and I’ve grown silent and mournful
for all my abandoned beliefs
in simple love and sacred humanity.
