Schleswig-Holstein
More than myself (estate, degree),
I discipline my world to me,
For whom the viewpoint fills the view;
For whom all things become these few:
Four pinnacles and four clear ponds,
A quartered sky that corresponds;
The charted cattle, maps of peace,
And white ellipses which are geese.
If, in the dream’s contempt of truth,
A goose-girl first is swan, then youth …
Awakened, would he see in mine
Seducer’s eyes and base design,
Or only see what he may know,
That evil’s grace is not to show.
Could he distinguish, did he try,
Which is the eye-glass, which the eye.
