Funny Short Poems For Children
1, The Crocodile © Lewis Carroll
How doth the little crocodile
Improve his shining tail,
And pour the waters of the Nile
On every golden scale!
How cheerfully he seems to grin,
How neatly spreads his claws,
And welcomes little fishes in,
With gently smiling jaws!
2, Snowball © Shel Silverstein
I made myself a snowball
As perfect as could be.
I thought I’d keep it as a pet
And let it sleep with me.
I made it some pajamas
And a pillow for its head.
Then last night it ran away,
But first it wet the bed
3, Springy Sidewalk © Kenn Nesbitt
The people outside on the sidewalk
can’t seem to remain on the ground.
They’re jumping and hopping and springing,
and generally bouncing around.
I’ve never seen anything like it.
It’s such an unusual scene,
as if they have springs in their sneakers,
or bounce on a big trampoline.
I think I know what may have happened
that caused this chaotic event:
Last week they replaced our old sidewalk
with one made of rubber cement!
4, My Cat is Fat © James McDonald
I’ve a cat named Vesters,
And he eats all day.
He always lays around,
And never wants to play.
Not even with a squeaky toy,
Nor anything that moves.
When I have him exercise,
He always disapproves.
So we’ve put him on a diet,
But now he yells all day.
And even though he’s thinner,
He still won’t come and play.
5, Topsysturvey-World © William Brighty Rands
If the butterfly courted the bee,
And the owl the porcupine;
If churches were built in the sea,
And three times one was nine;
If the pony rode his master,
If the buttercups ate the cows,
If the cat had the dire disaster
To be worried, sir, by the mouse;
If mamma, sir, sold the baby
To a gipsy for half-a-crown;
If a gentleman, sir, was a lady-
The world would be Upside-Down!
If any or all of these wonders
Should ever come about,
I should not consider them blunders,
For I should be Inside-Out!
6, Mr. McGallimagoo © James McDonald
My name is not McGallimagoo,
Although some would have you think.
All day long they call me this,
And I really think it stinks.
McGallimagoo come here to me
Mcgllimagoo sit down.
McGallimagoo is such a funny name,
But it always makes me frown.
So if you see me on the street,
Please don’t call me this.
Refer to me by my proper name,
Which is Mr. Hullibajiss.
7, A Riddle © Unknown
The man in the wilderness asked of me
How many strawberries grew in the sea.
I answered him as I thought good,
As many as red herrings grow in the wood.
8, Little Boy Blue © Darren Sardelli
Please cover your nose.
You sneezed on Miss Muffet
and ruined her clothes.
You sprayed Mother Hubbard
and now she is sick.
You put out the fire
on Jack’s candle stick.
Your sneeze is the reason
why Humpty fell down.
You drenched Yankee Doodle
when he came to town.
The blind mice are angry!
The sheep are upset!
From now on, use a tissue
so no one gets wet!
9, A Baby Sardine © Spike Milligan
A baby sardine
Saw her first submarine:
She was scared and watched through a peephole.
“Oh come, come, come,”
Said the sardine’s mum.
“It’s only a tin full of people.”
10, At the Zoo © William Makepeace Thackeray
First I saw the white bear, then I saw the black;
Then I saw the camel with a hump upon his back;
Then I saw the grey wolf, with mutton in his maw;
Then I saw the wombat waddle in the straw;
Then I saw the elephant a-waving of his trunk;
Then I saw the monkeys – mercy, how unpleasantly they smelt!
Short Christmas Poems for Children
1, Christmas Recipe © Gay Dowling
A pound of fun
And a pound of joy
Make a nice present
For a girl or boy.
A cup of goodness
And a cup of love
Really are gifts
From heaven above.
A pinch of holly
And a pinch of pine –
Now, we know
It’s Christmas time.
2, Talking Turkeys © Annabel Sheila
A squeak on the stairs.
Could Santa be here?
Better pull my blankets
Up to my ears.
He comes down the chimney,
That’s how he gets in.
Santa uses magic
To make himself thin.
I better keep still,
Can’t make a peep.
He doesn’t leave toys,
Unless you’re asleep.
My door just opened.
Someone’s by my bed.
It wasn’t Santa after all,
‘Cause Mom just kissed my head.
3, Santa © Unknown
Two merry blue eyes
A very little nose
A long snowy beard
And cheeks like a rose
A round, chubby man
A big, bulging pack
Hurray for old Santa
We’re glad he’s come back!
4, When Santa Claus Comes © Unknown
A good time is coming, I wish it were here,
The very best time in the whole of the year;
I’m counting each day on my fingers and thumbs —
the weeks that must pass before Santa Claus comes.
Then when the first snowflakes begin to come down,
And the wind whistles sharp and the branches are brown,
I’ll not mind the cold, though my fingers it numbs,
For it brings the time nearer when Santa Claus comes.
5, A Ride With Santa © Ovie Pedige Tanner
I wish that dear old Santa
Would take me for a ride;
I’d like to drive his reindeer
And sit by Santa’s side.
I’d like to help old Santa
Find all the girls and boys,
So each one might be happy
With Christmas books and toys.
Jingle, jingle, jingle,
Christmas toys we’d bring;
Jingle, jingle, jingle,
How the bells would ring!
You better watch out,
you better not cry
Better not pout, I’m telling you why
Santa Claus is coming to town
Haven Gillespie
6, Christmas © Iris Lane Franklin
Christmas is for mistletoe,
Evergreens, and holly;
Christmas is for Santa Claus,
Red and fat and jolly.
Christmas is for hearts to love
And voices to sing.
For on that day in Bethlehem
Was born the Christ, the King.
7, My Dad Would Like To Be Santa © Graham Craven
His belly’s getting bigger,
And his hair is turning white.
His eyes shine and sparkle
Like the stars on Christmas night.
He couldn’t fit down chimneys
When he can just fit through a door.
One mince pie would never do
He’d only ask for more.
He likes a nip of brandy;
It sets his cheeks aglow.
When he forgets the words to carols,
He just shouts Ho, Ho, Ho.
8, A Ride With Santa © Ovie Pedige Tanner
I wish that dear old Santa

I’d like to help old Santa

So each one might be happy
With Christmas books and toys.
Jingle, jingle, jingle,
Christmas toys we’d bring;
Jingle, jingle, jingle,
How the bells would ring!

Grabbed that snowman’s nose,
Nibble, nibble, crunch!
10, Little Jack Horner © Anon
Little Jack Horner
Sat in the corner,
Eating of Christmas pie:
He put in his thumb,
And pulled out a plum,
And said, “What a good boy am I!”

When I was one,
I had just begun.
When I was two,
I was nearly new.
When I was three,
I was hardly me.

When I was five,
I was just alive.
But now I am six,
I’m as clever as clever.
So I think I’ll be six
Now and forever.

Brown and furry
Caterpillar in a hurry,

To live again a butterfly.

4, Mom Always Knows © Unknown
Everybody has a mother
That is simple and true
But often we forget our moms
And all the things they do
On Mother’s Day take some time
To thank her for all she’s done
Food and clothes and rides to school
And driving to places where you have fun
Like zoos and parks and playgrounds
And to the dentist’s office, too
It might not be as fun a time
But Mom always knows what’s good for you
5, Mother’s Day Game © Unknown
There’s a very special Mother’s Day tradition
We share in our family across generations
I’m the youngest and I go with my Mom
To a special brunch at the coolest place in town
We meet my Grandma there, but what’s more
She brings her mother, who’s 104
That’s four generations of our family’s women
Brunching on toast with sugar and cinnamon
We always compare the way we look the same
And the ways we look different, it’s our private little game
When I become a mother, many years away
I’ll bring my daughter and teach her how to play

5, Why an Easter Bunny? © Kelly Roper
You may think that this sounds funny,
But why do we get eggs from the Easter bunny?
Shouldn’t there be an Easter Chicken
With her scrawny legs a-kickin’
As she rushes around in a whirl
Leaving eggs for each boy and girl?
6, The Last Plastic Egg © Michele Meleen

And pops right into the ground. (put fingers in hole)

Here are my two ears, see how they flop. (hold hands at sides of head and flop them)
