The mother is a companion, a confidant to her children when they were young. She and her children overcome the very first challenges and difficulties in life. Mothers spend their youth and lives taking care of their children, both physically and emotionally. A mother’s love for her child is unchangeable, which makes losing a mother an extremely painful experience.
Losing a mother is one of the worst experiences children have and that most people will go through at some point in life. The loss, grief and mourning of a mother’s death are really difficult to put into words, so poems about the loss of a mother will help you find comfort and encouragement within these difficult circumstances.
When words become powerless in this situation, poetry will make a good substitute and help to release your overflowing emotions. And below are very touching and heartbreaking poems about the loss of a mother to express the grief and love for your deceased mother. In addition, you can find inspiration for your own verses to honor your recently deceased mother, these poems will help you preserve the memories of your mother.
1, Mother © MD Hedaetul Islam
The mother is a wonderful creation of the Creator,
that mother puts insight into the dying child.
The mother works for the child from birth to death,
The mother carries the child in a hundred hardships for the rest of her life.
No matter how restless the mother is with the little grief of the child,
release the treasure of the breast from that grief how much the mother cries to the Creator.
The mother is a special refuge for the child,
no enemy of that child ever gets indulgence from the mother.
Sometimes the mother fights with her life to give birth to a child,
no matter how much comfort the mother gives up leaving the child on her lap.
The mother is desperate to give all the good things to the child,
the mother crosses the deep sea of sorrow for the happiness of that child.
The mother’s sleep is disturbed by the child’s little disease,
the mother makes a storm of tears thinking how the child’s disease can be cured.
The mother gives good food to the child,
so that the child is satisfied by eating good food.
When feeding the child the mother herself eats very little food,
even from those torn clothes the mother wants to see the child with good clothes.
From the beginning of the child,
death is a shadow beside the mother.
Even if the mother herself is in trouble,
she keeps the child happy and at peace.
One of the incomparable creations of the mother creator is a special gift for the child,
the debt of that mother will not be repaid even though the child gives life for the mother.
2, Mother In Heaven © Unknown
If roses grow in Heaven, Lord,
Please pick a bunch for me.
Place them in my Mother’s arms
And tell her they’re from me.
Tell her that I love and miss her,
And when she turns to smile,
Place a kiss upon her cheek,
And hold her for a while.
Because remembering her is easy,
I do it everyday,
But there’s an ache within my heart
That will never go away.
3, We Had a Wonderful Mother © Unknown
We had a wonderful mother,
One who never really grew old;
Her smile was made of sunshine,
And her heart was solid gold;
Her eyes were as bright as shining stars,
And in her cheeks fair roses you see.
We had a wonderful mother,
And that’s the way it will always be.
But take heed, because
She’s still keeping an eye on all of us,
So let’s make sure
She will like what she sees.
4, Precious Mother © Chiemeka Sophia Urom
From the inception of time, to the conception time,
U have always been mine,
And you are divine.
You fought in the midst of life and death while giving birth to me,
You struggled and stayed strong all just for me,
And you work like a superwoman to please me.
Often times you have acted heroic,
And that’s why I call you “My heroine”.
Of a truth, you are indeed my role model and a heroine.
You sent me to school,
And made me understand that school is cool,
That I should always stay cool and try to be good.
Precious mother, I don’t mind what they say,
Because your promises have come to stay,
And in your arms I will always lay because you’re my physical hope and stay.
I call you “Precious”
Because you are indeed, so precious,
And you deserve to be treated preciously.
I promise I will build you a house, buy you a car and expensive gold,
No matter all odds,
Because you are worth more than gold.
You are a Superwoman,
Because you always take the place of a man,
Whenever dad refuses to act like a man.
You are stronger than everyone I know,
And I wish u know on ur own,
Even when you peck me slow.
I have always said that, “I have met an angel in person”,
Because in my eyes you are perfect though no one is perfect,
But I know you are striving for perfection.
You are indeed priceless,
Because you taught me how to be selfless,
And I promise I can’t heart you less because of ur kindness.
5, Remembering My Mother © Belinda Stotler
My mother seems so far away from me
On that beautiful white shore across the sea.
Yet I remember love’s soft glow upon her face
And the feel of her touch and tender embrace.
When I am weary from the burdens I’ve borne,
And the path is unclear and I feel so forlorn,
I remember her loving support was always near
And her advice made the path ahead seem clear.
When I feel there is no one who seems to care,
Or when the heartache seems too hard to bear,
I remember how she always stood by my side
And would tenderly wipe away the tears I cried.
When there are moments of great joy and pride
And I wish my Mother was standing at my side,
I remember she saw more than I thought I could be,
And know I owe my triumphs to her belief in me.
When I reminisce about the things she used to say
And I miss her and think she is so far away,
I remember what she gave lives on through me,
And one day I’ll see her on the shore across the sea.
6, Your Mother, Your Angel © Natasha Jordan
You look back on memories you forgot you had,
And at times you’ll smile even though it hurts so bad.
Your mother is a special woman, and no one can take her place.
You’ll find a peace of mind when you remember her smiling face.
Your mother is an angel now; she flies high above the rest,
And in your hearts always and forever she will be the best.
She has earned her wings, and it’s time for her to fly.
I know it hurts; no one is ever ready to say goodbye.
She knows you do not understand and that you cry at night,
But as you finally drift off to sleep, let her memory hold you tight.
She will be your guardian angel through the rest of your life,
Helping lead you on the path between what’s wrong and right.
Your mother loves you so very much, and her love will always remain true.
Please don’t ever think for a second that your mother will forget you.
A mother’s love is like no other in the whole world,
And she has the most wonderful memories of a little boy and girl.
She has taken them with her as she’s flown away,
Up to Heaven free of pain, which is her new home to stay.
So although you cannot see her and you wish she could be there,
Your mother can always hear you, and your mother will always care.
A mother does not forget the two greatest loves of her life,
And she loved nothing more than being your mommy and your daddy’s wife.
She is so proud of her family, and that’s in her heart to stay,
Even though she’s an angel and has had to fly away.
So as you cry your tears, remember your mother’s love
Being sent to you from her, from the beautiful Heaven above.
She will be there through your good times; she will be there through your bad.
She’ll be there when you are happy, she’ll be there when you’re sad.
Your mother has become and angel now; it is her time to fly,
And you will never know how badly it hurt me to watch you have to say goodbye.
7, Missing Mama © Claudia Lee
I awake each morning to start a new day,
But the pain of losing you never goes away.
I go about the things I have to do,
And as the hours pass, I think again of you.
I want to call you and just hear your voice.
Then I remember that I have no choice,
For you are not there and now my heart cries
Just to see you again, to tell you goodbye.
To say, “Mama I love you and I always will,”
And hope that much of you in me you’ve instilled.
The day that you left I just didn’t know
That you were going where I couldn’t go.
And now all my memories of you are so dear,
But gosh, how I miss you and wish you were here.
Who now can hear me when I need to cry?
It’s so hard to tell you, “Mama goodbye.”
Someday I know all will be well
And I’ll see you again with stories to tell
Of how you were missed and how we have grown
And how good it is to finally be home.
Until then my memories of you I’ll keep near,
And I’ll pass them on to those who are dear.
I miss you, Mama!
8, Gone Home © Phill Rawlins
Does love still last?
Then do not weep for me
When from this mortal cast
I am at length set free.
For I am free,
and gone is all my pain.
If you have love for me
Don’t wish me back again.
Oh loved ones dear,
Now you are left alone,
Have not a doubt or fear
I have just gone home.
9, Loved So Deeply © J.K Rowling
Love as powerful as your mother’s
for you leaves its own mark.
To have been loved so deeply,
even though the person who loved us is gone,
will give us some protection forever.
10, All That Was Her © Oliver Wright
Where’s she gone, the one we knew,
The one we knew and loved,
Who knew us all and loved us all –
Where now is all that love?
Where now her smile? Where now her frown?
Her bright, resounding laugh?
Ah, all are gone, by time undone;
All that was her is past.
Down the stream we drifted,
And saw her on the shore;
Around a bend we drifted,
And saw her then no more.
And yet still she stands there
Still stands beside the shore.
11, No Goodbyes © Annette R. Hershey
Oh Father, can you hear me?
I’m sending a prayer your way,
I’m clutching hard to my faith, as mom taught me,
As she draws closer to you each day.
I talk to her in whispers,
And I hope she hears me pray,
I hope you send an angel
To guide her towards your way.
I continue to tell her I love her
And thank her for all the sacrifices she has made
And for the unconditional love,
No matter what kind of behavior I displayed.
Mom, can you hear me?
I have so much more to say.
I will continue on with your legacy.
I hope I can be as strong as you one day.
You taught me the importance of family.
I have learned from the very best.
Don’t you worry yourself now, Mom,
You keep yourself at rest.
I’m sorry if I’m selfish.
I’m not ready to let go of your hand.
I’m trying to remember the message
From “Footprints In The Sand.”
Dear Mom, can you please wake up?
I have not heard your voice today.
I promise I would sit and listen
To everything you want to say.
I know you are getting weary.
You are ready to go home.
I imagine you are dreaming of your Savior
Sitting upon his throne.
I hope you take my love with you,
As tears fall on your cheek.
Dear God, please carry me through this,
I’m feeling very weak.
Dear Mom, I’m very thankful
For all the years we’ve had.
I’m trying to remember you laughing
So I will not stay so very sad.
Through the rest of my life I will carry
All your love with me.
I promise I will be the best mom, grandmother and person
That I can possibly be.
God must think your time is almost done here.
I feel you going away,
I love you, Mom. No goodbyes.
I will see you again one day.
12, How Grateful I Would Be To Have Just One More Day © Kathy J. Parenteau
If I could have just one more day and
wishes did come true,
I’d spend every glorious moment
side by side with you.
Recalling all the years we shared
and memories we made,
how grateful I would be
to have just one more day.
Where the tears I’ve shed are
not in vain and only fall in bliss.
So many things I’d let you know
about the days you’ve missed.
I wouldn’t have to make pretend
you never went away.
How grateful I would be to
have just one more day.
When that day came to a close
and the sun began to set,
a million times I’d let you know
I never will forget
the heart of gold you left behind
when you entered Heaven’s gate.
How grateful I would be to
have just one more day.
13, Although You’re Gone © Shannon Walker
Although you’re gone, I’m not alone,
And never shall I be,
For the precious memories of the bond we shared
Will never depart from me.
Our love surpassed the ups and downs
And helped us along the way,
And that same love will give me strength
To manage this loss each day.
On my mind and in my heart,
Mom, you shall forever be,
For just as much as I am a part of you,
You are a part of me!
14, My Brilliant Mother © Casey Gamble
When my mother passed away,
Her absence left its mark.
I’ll use her light to guide me
When this journey of grief feels dark.
The greatest gifts she gave me
Are courage, strength and resilience.
I wouldn’t be able to handle this pain
If it wasn’t for her brilliance.
Each time I laughed, she’d laugh along.
And when I cried, she’d wipe my tears.
Each time I fell, she’d help me up.
For my wins, she was there to cheer.
She prepared me for the future,
Taught me how to face my fears.
Now the future is here but she is gone,
And everything seems unclear.
She’d been with me from the start
With constant, unwavering love.
Though she’s moved on from this world,
I know she’s watching from above.
She would tell me to be strong, now.
And continue on without her.
So I’ll be sure to lead a worthwhile life
In honor of my brilliant mother.
15, You Made the World Brighter © Casey Gamble
Mother, your laugh was a song
Making us smile.
The sound of joy,
Music to our ears.
Your eyes were a painting
Lighting up rooms,
Captivating attention,
Encouraging conversation.
Your life was a movie
With love, emotion, excitement,
With ups and downs,
With you, our hero.
Though we’ll forever miss your laugh,
Your eyes and your life,
We’re grateful for your legacy
Of making the world brighter.
16, A Beautiful Mother © Amy Finley
Your love, your sacrifice, your smile
You left a legacy in even the smallest things
You gave so much of yourself
Loving others unselfishly and unconditionally.
You were a light, a beacon, a fire
Burning bright through the years
You put your burdens on the shelf
Giving your heart so freely and beautifully.
You brought laughter, learning, and joy
Into moments large and small
Your heart was your true wealth
A beautiful mother inside and out.
17, Here in Our Hearts © Amy Finley
Our hearts grieve
Our tears fall
Our arms are empty
Without you here.
The thoughts swirl
Our souls ache
The world seems so lonely
With the loss so near.
The memories whisper
in the sorrow
Comforting our hearts
Reminding us of your love, so clear.
You were a mother who gave
Who always stood strong
Meant the world to so many
Was so incredibly dear.
All our minds cherish you
we honor your memory
Our love will always remain
and in our hearts, you’re still here.
18, Roses For Mama © Lynn Casstevens
Lord, are there roses in your garden
On the shores of jubilee
Would you pick a dozen of your best
And deliver them for me?
For you see, today is mothers’ day
And I can’t visit my mom
For it wasn’t very long ago
The angels came and took her home.
So if there are roses in your garden
On the shores of Jubilee
Would you pick a dozen of your best
And deliver them for me?
Would you take them to my mother
And tell her that I love her.
Tell her that I miss her
In oh! So many ways
But I have joy in knowing
We’ll meet again someday
And we’ll pick roses together
On the shores of Jubilee..
19, My Mother © Carol Bodenham
Look up to the sky.
Now tell me what you see.
A cloud, the moon, possibly the sun.
Many answers there will be.
When I look up to the sky,
I’ll tell you what I see.
I see my mother,
And she’s looking back at me.
She tells me she didn’t want to leave us,
But it was time for her to depart.
It was the hardest thing she had to do,
And it’s breaking her heart.
She tells me we mustn’t be sad
Because finally she’s pain free.
She’s found her place in heaven
Underneath a blossom tree.
She’ll always be there to guide us
When we feel we’ve lost the way.
She’ll always be there to comfort us
And wipe those tears away.
She’ll always be there to share our joy
And laugh at the jokes we make.
In order to feel her presence,
Only a little imagination it’ll take.
She may be in the form of a butterfly
Or simply a floating feather
Or hovering over like a busy bee
Or simply part of the weather.
You’ve all come here to say your farewell,
But for me it’s not goodbye.
If I want to see her, all I have to do
Is look up to the sky.
Sweet dreams, Mam
20, Pollen © Jay Bernard
I order flowers for my mother’s dead mother.
I remember my father’s father died too
but I do not send him any flowers.
Of what provenance
my mother’s crowd of keepers,
my father’s single room?
I light neither father candles
and grow more like them.
I disappear when too remembered.
21, What I Learned From My Mother © Julia Kasdorf
I learned from my mother how to love
the living, to have plenty of vases on hand
in case you have to rush to the hospital
with peonies cut from the lawn, black ants
still stuck to the buds. I learned to save jars
large enough to hold fruit salad for a whole
grieving household, to cube home-canned pears
and peaches, to slice through maroon grape skins
and flick out the sexual seeds with a knife point.
I learned to attend viewings even if I didn’t know
the deceased, to press the moist hands
of the living, to look in their eyes and offer
sympathy, as though I understood loss even then.
I learned that whatever we say means nothing,
what anyone will remember is that we came.
I learned to believe I had the power to ease
awful pains materially like an angel.
Like a doctor, I learned to create
from another’s suffering my own usefulness, and once
you know how to do this, you can never refuse.
To every house you enter, you must offer
healing: a chocolate cake you baked yourself,
the blessing of your voice, your chaste touch.
22, My Mother’s Nerves Are Shot © Omotara James
a nerve is a shot. A shot
is an arch. My mother is an archer.
The archer breaks the dead branch dead.
Dead branches rot. Rot from the bark.
My mother’s nerves bark: shot
through loss. Death peels her nerves.
Death is an archer. Death shoots rot:
just misses her. I see her tremble.
Moss greens her bark. Greens where she
trembles. Where there was death, fruit grows.
The fruits of death. Fruits moss the branches
through the blinds where she trembles still.
23, My Mother Would Be A Falconress © Robert Duncan
My mother would be a falconress,
And I, her gay falcon treading her wrist,
would fly to bring back
from the blue of the sky to her, bleeding, a prize,
where I dream in my little hood with many bells
jangling when I’d turn my head.
My mother would be a falconress,
and she sends me as far as her will goes.
She lets me ride to the end of her curb
where I fall back in anguish.
I dread that she will cast me away,
for I fall, I mis-take, I fail in her mission.
She would bring down the little birds.
And I would bring down the little birds.
When will she let me bring down the little birds,
pierced from their flight with their necks broken,
their heads like flowers limp from the stem?
I tread my mother’s wrist and would draw blood.
Behind the little hood my eyes are hooded.
I have gone back into my hooded silence,
talking to myself and dropping off to sleep.
For she has muffled my dreams in the hood she has made me,
sewn round with bells, jangling when I move.
She rides with her little falcon upon her wrist.
She uses a barb that brings me to cower.
She sends me abroad to try my wings
and I come back to her. I would bring down
the little birds to her
I may not tear into, I must bring back perfectly.
I tear at her wrist with my beak to draw blood,
and her eye holds me, anguisht, terrifying.
She draws a limit to my flight.
Never beyond my sight, she says.
She trains me to fetch and to limit myself in fetching.
She rewards me with meat for my dinner.
But I must never eat what she sends me to bring her.
Yet it would have been beautiful, if she would have carried me,
always, in a little hood with the bells ringing,
at her wrist, and her riding
to the great falcon hunt, and me
flying up to the curb of my heart from her heart
to bring down the skylark from the blue to her feet,
straining, and then released for the flight.
My mother would be a falconress,
and I her gerfalcon raised at her will,
from her wrist sent flying, as if I were her own
pride, as if her pride
knew no limits, as if her mind
sought in me flight beyond the horizon.
Ah, but high, high in the air I flew.
And far, far beyond the curb of her will,
were the blue hills where the falcons nest.
And then I saw west to the dying sun–
it seemd my human soul went down in flames.
I tore at her wrist, at the hold she had for me,
until the blood ran hot and I heard her cry out,
far, far beyond the curb of her will
to horizons of stars beyond the ringing hills of the world where the falcons nest
I saw, and I tore at her wrist with my savage beak.
I flew, as if sight flew from the anguish in her eye beyond her sight,
sent from my striking loose, from the cruel strike at her wrist,
striking out from the blood to be free of her.
My mother would be a falconress,
and even now, years after this,
when the wounds I left her had surely heald,
and the woman is dead,
her fierce eyes closed, and if her heart
were broken, it is stilld
I would be a falcon and go free.
I tread her wrist and wear the hood,
talking to myself, and would draw blood.
24, To My Mother © Christina Rossetti
To-day’s your natal day;
Sweet flowers I bring:
Mother, accept, I pray
My offering.
And may you happy live,
And long us bless;
Receiving as you give
Great happiness.
25, Sonnet To My Mother © George Barker
Most near, most dear, most loved, and most far,
Under the huge window where I often found her
Sitting as huge as Asia, seismic with laughter,
Gin and chicken helpless in her Irish hand,
Irresistible as Rabelais but most tender for
The lame dogs and hurt birds that surround her,—
She is a procession no one can follow after
But be like a little dog following a brass band.
She will not glance up at the bomber or condescend
To drop her gin and scuttle to a cellar,
But lean on the mahogany table like a mountain
Whom only faith can move, and so I send
O all her faith and all my love to tell her
That she will move from mourning into morning.
26, In Memory Of My Mother © Patrick Kavanagh
I do not think of you lying in the wet clay
Of a Monaghan graveyard; I see
You walking down a lane among the poplars
On your way to the station, or happily
Going to second Mass on a summer Sunday–
You meet me and you say:
‘Don’t forget to see about the cattle–‘
Among your earthiest words the angels stray.
And I think of you walking along a headland
Of green oats in June,
So full of repose, so rich with life–
And I see us meeting at the end of a town
On a fair day by accident, after
The bargains are all made and we can walk
Together through the shops and stalls and markets
Free in the oriental streets of thought.
O you are not lying in the wet clay,
For it is harvest evening now and we
Are piling up the ricks against the moonlight
And you smile up at us — eternally.
27, If There Are Any Heavens My Mother Will © E. E. Cummings
If there are any heavens my mother will (all by herself) have one.
It will not be a pansy heaven nor
a fragile heaven of lilies-of-the-valley but
it will be a heaven of black red roses my father will be
(deep like a rose tall like a rose)
standing near my (swaying over her silent) with eyes which are really petals and see
nothing with the face of a poet really which
is a flower and not a face with hands which whisper
This is my beloved my
(suddenly in sunlight he will bow,
and the whole garden will bow)
28, Richer Then Gold © Strickland Gillilan
You may have tangible wealth untold;
Caskets of jewels and coffers of gold.
Richer than I you can never be –
I had a mother who read to me.
29, You Mattered To Me © Ruth Morris
You lived your life thinking that no one cared.
You thought you were all alone, your heart feeling tattered.
I am here to tell you that you were wrong
‘Cause you see – Mom – to me you mattered.
I loved you when you were angry and mean.
I loved you when you were kind as could be.
I loved you not just because I had to.
I loved you because you mattered to me.
It hurts to know that now you’re gone
And never will your face again I see.
I hurt not because I am supposed to;
I hurt because you mattered to me.
I have to live on each day without you.
It doesn’t get easier as it is supposed to be.
I feel the loss of you to my very soul
Because you see – Mom – you mattered to me.
Your touch, your smile, your funny wit.
The times it was just you and me.
I will miss you, Mom, with all my heart
‘Cause you still matter to me…
30, I Remember You © Anne P. House
A moment passed, an hour, a day,
But still the pain didn’t go away.
A week, a month, and then a year,
Yet the loneliness didn’t disappear.
The years rolled on and life did too,
And my thoughts often return to you.
Though I accept that you cannot return,
My pain, though dulled, continues to burn.
Like something broken that can’t be mended,
My life feels like it’s been upended.
I miss you now as I missed you then.
My mother, my confidant, my friend.
And as I watch my young sons play,
I wish you too could enjoy this day.
They cannot miss whom they never knew,
So I miss you more as I remember you.
31, A Daughter’s Promise © Allie B. Quaglieri
Every time I smile,
Every time I sigh,
I think of your face,
And a tear escapes my eye.
You were my world,
My inspiration and my heart,
But when you left me,
I thought I would fall apart.
You were my best friend,
My one true confidant,
And that’s not all you were.
You were also my mom.
I didn’t want to live without you,
But you would have wanted me to,
And if there’s anyone I want to make happy,
That anyone is you.
I would have given anything to have you back,
But I know now that it was meant to be,
For you are still watching from up there,
And I know you’re watching me.
I’ll make you proud, Mom.
I’m going to fulfill your wish.
You’re going to see me and smile.
That’s a daughter’s promise.
32, Mother O’ Mine © Rudyard Kipling
If I were hanged on the highest hill,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
I know whose love would follow me still,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
If I were drowned in the deepest sea,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
I know whose tears would come down to me,
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
If I were damned of body and soul,
I know whose prayers would make me whole
Mother o’ mine, O mother o’ mine!
33, Remembrance © Laura M. Phipps-Kelley
Mother,
as I walk through the journey of life,
I remember.
I remember how you helped me to grow
with love, truth, and honesty.
I remember how you helped me to choose the right path
with values, morals, and self worth.
I remember how you gave me dreams
with hope and confidence.
As I remember,
I pray to be a mother like you,
to shape my children into strong adults,
full of hopes and dreams.
You made me who I am today,
and I will always remember you in life’s passings,
for no one could touch my life as you have.
Remembrance in life’s passing is the truest form of love one can give, for a memory should never die and a love should live forever in the heart of another!
34, A Mother’s Love © Claudia M. Piticaru
A mother’s love
Is a gift from above
That is a wonderful treasure
Kept in our hearts forever.
When that loved one passes on,
And it seems like all is gone,
Those dear memories come to mind.
A sweet moment we will find.
When in pain and sadness,
Look back at the gladness.
For we should rejoice
That heaven got another voice.
Her body may be upon this earth,
But her soul is in heaven living a new birth.
So be comforted when you are grieving.
It is on a blessing she is receiving.
35, For Mum © Hazel J. Lock
Your time has come to leave us, Mum.
Dad called you back to him.
The ballroom floor is ready
For your dancing to begin.
Although you left some time ago,
As your memory slipped away,
I hope you were remembering
When you danced the nights away.
You did so much throughout your life
But so much you couldn’t recall.
I knew it was in there somewhere,
but it was hard to find it all.
You remembered lovely flowers
And the songs you used to sing,
Dancing to the operas,
And the joy they used to bring.
But it was hard for you to remember
Just who I was to you,
And you didn’t know my name, Mum;
That was hard to recall too.
Once the fog has lifted,
And it’s clearer for you to see,
I hope you will remember
Just how much you meant to me.
