Not only parents but also grandparents also have special love for their descendants. A grandfather is a person who often listens, shares and tells fairy tales and also become a good friend to their grandchildren. Grandfather is always there to bring laughter and play with his grandchildren and even comfort when needed.
Grandparents are a part of children’s childhood memories, so the death of grandparents will be a great loss. Grandfather holds an honorable place in the family and like other members, his passing will leave a void in everyone’s heart. For all the descendants, the time spent with their grandfather turns into precious memories that are kept in the heart, and can only be eased even after a while.
Losing someone you love is a terrible thing to go through. The following grandfather’s death poems will be the perfect way to share that pain of loss that cannot be put into words. Poems with deep, touching words will help to deliver messages of love and grief when losing a grandfather.

1, In Memory © Cindie Lepp
looking at the wall unit.
Something caught my eye
I looked at all the war medals
And felt the need to cry
I gently picked one up
And held it tightly in my hand
I tried to think of what he was like
Was he a wonderful man?
As I read what was engraved
I envisionlised his fate
A young man fighting for his country
While his dreams lie in wait
The medals were engraved
With his honourable name
But he paid the ultimate sacrifice
In order to have that small fame
Victor Stanley died in action
I read with a tear
He died with along side 5 others
His future was no longer here
Signed up underage
He was barely 18
When he was shipped over to Gallipoli
To fight hard and keen
Back at home in Australia
His girlfriend France, sat in wait,
To announce to him she was pregnant
The news that she knew would seal their fate.
With butterfly’s in her chest
She called the war department service
Who took Victor straight off that ship
And let their love, through marriage, surface
Very soon they were married
The rings were put on both hands
But all too soon he was ordered back
To continue the fight for his beloved land
So recently married was Victor
As he continued to fight in France
With sadness in his heart
And sorrow in his stance
Out at the western front
Victor fought with heartache inside
Because he wanted to be with Frances
And be with his unborn child
But a few months laterit happened
Frances labour had begun
And after time she gave birth to
Victor Stanley’s only son.
As happy as she was
She couldn’t help but be sad
For Victor should be present
And feel the joy of becoming a dad
She knew at that moment
It would be an honour to his family
To call her beautiful baby boy
After his dad, Victor Stanley
Months passed and oneday
Frances waited with anticipation
For a letter to arrive from victor
But instead the postman had a look of sheer frustration
Slowly she opened the envelope
That she recognised was not his
She couldn’t believe the contents
Her heart beat seemed to miss
Her legs could hardly hold her
As she stumbled her way inside
All his memories came and flooded her
Her whole life had simply died
She read how On a cold stormy day
When Victor fought with 5 friends
The Germans came up behind them
And that was their bitter end
Their bodies destroyed so badly
They were hard to recognise
5 boys who were barely men
Had paid the ultimate sacrifice
A war that took too many lives
But in honour i am told
But what good is death in honour
At barely nineteen years old
And now Frances had the task
That no mother should have to do
Of being a doting mother
But also a father too
Victor junior was my grandfather
My dear fathers beloved dad
He passed away at 65
After a great life that he had
He lived a life that most wish for
Full of happiness and dreams
Treasuring his father’s medals
And all of what that means
Now those medals have been passed down
throughout our families hand
And in his honour we will treasure them
For now we understand
My great grandfather was a hero
Although we never met
He gave his life so we could live ours
Thats something we should never forget
2, Do Not Stand At My Grave And Weep © Mary Elizabeth Frye
Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow.
I am the diamond glint on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain.
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you wake in the morning hush,
I am the swift, uplifting rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft starlight at night.
Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
(Do not stand at my grave and cry.
I am not there, I did not die!)
3, My Journey’s Just Begun © Ellen Brenneman
Don’t think of me as gone away
My journey’s just begun
Life holds so many facets
This earth is but one
Just think of me as resting
From the sorrows and the tears
In a place of warmth and comfort
Where there are no days and years
Think of how I must be wishing
That you could know today
How nothing but your sadness
Can really go away
And think of me as living
In the hearts of those I touched
For nothing loved is ever lost
And I know I was loved so much
4, Grandpa, I Miss You © Amanda Dwyer
I know it hurt you;
It hurt me too,
But now that you’re gone
All I know is I miss you.
You were there for so long.
I never thought you would leave.
I thought you had another year
Waiting up your sleeve.
The day that you left
Was the saddest of my life.
I remember sitting at home
And crying all day and night.
I might be selfish,
But I wish you were here
Or that you stayed
For one more year.
I know you loved me,
And I still love you too,
So I’m trying to be strong
Just for you.
I know I’m not perfect.
I know I’ll never be.
I just hope you’re up there
And that you’re proud of me.
You had to let go
Even though you were holding on for so long,
But there’s not a day I don’t think of you
And how you were so strong.
I just want to tell you
That you’re always in my heart.
Even though I still cry,
I know we’re not apart.
Thinking of you, Grandpa…
5, For My Grandpa © Ilona M. Blake
I know we are all feeling a little bit sad
That we’ve lost our Grandpa, our friend, and our dad.
Together we have cried an ocean of tears
As we feel so empty and hold many fears.
But Grandpa would want us to know he’s in a good place
And that he’s watching us all with a smile on his face,
As we have made him so proud, as proud as can be
That he has raised such a beautiful and special family.
Thinking back now, I really must say
I feel lucky and privileged to have known Grandpa to this day.
For in my life, you have played a special part.
The memories I will treasure and keep close to my heart.
For me, I am glad my little baby he got to meet.
And for all of us, be grateful, his life is now complete.
To each one of us he has loved and cared.
As a family, be thankful for the good times we shared.
Although he has gone, we will always be together,
And his spirit will live on in each one of us forever.
When you look to the sky, look for the brightest star,
As that will be Grandpa looking down on us from afar.
And now I would like to thank the good Lord above
For blessing us with our Grandpa, with his kindness and love.
Dear God, if it is not too much fuss,
Take extra special care of our Grandpa, for he is very dear to us.
Grandpa, if you are listening, say a prayer for us every day.
Be sure to protect us and guide us on our way.
We know when God called you, you had to go,
But we want you to know, Grandpa, we miss you and love you so.
6, We Had a Wonderful Grandfather © Unknown
We had a wonderful grandfather,
One who never really grew old;
His smile was made of sunshine,
And his heart was solid gold;
His eyes were as bright as shining stars,
And in his cheeks fair roses you see.
We had a wonderful grandfather,
And that’s the way it will always be.
But take heed, because
He’s still keeping an eye on all of us,
So let’s make sure
He will like what he sees.
7, To My Grandfather © Georgia Harkness
A giant pine, magnificent and old
Stood staunch against the sky and all around
Shed beauty, grace and power.
Within its fold birds safely reared their young.
The velvet ground beneath was gentle,
and the cooling shade gave cheer to passers by.
Its towering arms a landmark stood, erect and unafraid,
As if to say, “Fear naught from life’s alarms”.
It fell one day.
Where it had dauntless stood was loneliness and void.
But men who passed paid tribute – and said,
“To know this life was good,
It left it’s mark on me. Its work stands fast”.
And so it lives. Such life no bonds can hold –
This giant pine, magnificent and old.
8, Grandfather © Jack Royle
The chair where you sat.
Telling tales of old.
Was our ship.
Our castle.
We lived every story.
Every fable you ever sold.
You were my wrinkled raconteur.
My ancient talking tree.
Shrouded in your pipe smoke from the age of three.
From wars in deserts.
Love in africa.
Betrayal and mystery in Spain.
We fought your battles, kissed your loves.
Cried tears.
Felt your pain.
I was a horseback warrior.
A fighter pilot.
An knight in armour gold.
At age of three.
I felt like we were fearless brave and bold.
Sailed seven seas.
Defeated knaves.
Fought for freedom.
Freed the slaves.
All from the safety of your knees.
My rugged storyteller.
Ancient hero.
You’ve reached the end of your tale.
So now it’s me.
Telling brother of three.
Letting our imagination set sail.
9, Grandfather © Sophie
Everything is different now,
Now,you can’t be with us.
I wish,you’d be here,
By our side.
I loved your lovely hugs,
I loved your pretty smile,
I loved,when I was sad and
You came to me,
Smiled at me,
Then you hugged me,with your hot embrace.
It washed away all my pain.
I know, you’re at good place now,
There above the stars.
They must love you so much
‘Cuz you were the best.
I miss you,
I miss your smile,
I miss your hugs,
I miss the times
We were together
Everytime.
10, Grandfather © Tabby
The father of my mother
The grandfather of her children
There for us forever
We are part of your burden
Struggles through the past
Your strong ability to keep going
Is a family gene well cast
Through you it is showing
Raised my mother all to well
Eighteen or more years under your roof
Gave a personality that all can tell
The loving grandchildren is your proof
Love is as flexible as a spine
Yours I hold near
Your blood runs through mine
There your love is reflected in the mirror
11, Away © James Whitcomb Riley
I cannot say and I will not say
That he is dead, he is just away.
With a cheery smile and a wave of hand
He has wandered into an unknown land;
And left us dreaming how very fair
Its needs must be, since he lingers there.
And you-oh you, who the wildest yearn
From the old-time step and the glad return –
Think of his faring on, as dear
In the love of there, as the love of here
Think of him still the same way, I say;
He is not dead, he is just away.
12, Goodbye, Granddad © Sarah Harrison
Heaven has received another angel,
The night sky another star.
Your life has become a loving memory.
I know you will never be far.
I know you are watching over me
As my life goes on.
I will treasure the memories I have of you.
I can’t believe you’re gone.
You were a loving, caring granddad.
You were there for me a lot.
You will always hold a place in my heart,
A loving, treasured spot.
You were really one in a million,
A cut above the rest.
All who knew you would agree.
You simply were the best.
So, Granddad, I will say goodbye.
I love and miss you with all my heart,
But as long as I have my loving memories,
We will never be too far apart.
13, Grandfather, Grandfather © Jessica Rutland
Grandfather grandfather,
I forever hear your name,
Never hear your words,
Cause their never the same.
Grandfather grandfather,
You see me cry,
Barely see me smile,
But always see me try.
Grandfather grandfather,
I’ll never feel your touch,
I only feel your pain,
And it’s way too much.
Grandfather grandfather,
You always see my fears,
Always see me hide,
My heartache and tears.
Grandfather grandfather,
I know you wont forget me,
Or our memories and dreams,
We will always see.
14, The Death Of Grandfather © Aleksandr Aleksandrovich Blok
We waited commonly for sleep or even death.
The instances were wearisome as ages.
But suddenly the wind’s refreshing breath
Touched through the window the Holy Bible’s pages:
An old man goes there – who’s now all white-haired –
With rapid steps and merry eyes, alone,
He smiles to us, and often calls with hand,
And leaves us with a gait, that is well-known.
And suddenly we all, who watched the old man’s track,
Well recognized just him who now lay before us,
And turning in a sudden rapture back,
Beheld a corpse with eyes forever closed …
And it was good for us the soul’s way to trace,
And, in the leaving one, to find the glee it’s forming.
The time had come. Recall and love in grace,
And celebrate another house-warming!
15, Passing Over © R. Davis
I try to see the sunshine in
the trees and not the bugs.
I try to leave no scars,
but lately I feel my body
is becoming one. Ugly
enough to some, but a sign
to me that I am living as
fully as a soul can live.
Where I go next, I enter
raw, as the moon enters
nightly. I think I can hear
the angels in the Holy City
singing. They sound like
lovely birds. I think this
boatman has now become a
captain. I mount my horse.
16, Your Spirit © Tram-Tiara T. Von Reichenbach
I know that no matter what
You will always be with me.
When life separates us
I’ll know it is only your soul
Saying goodbye to your body
But your spirit will be with me always.
When I see a bird chirping on a nearby branch
I will know it is you singing to me.
When a butterfly brushes gently by me so care freely
I will know it is you assuring me you are free from pain.
When the gentle fragrance of a flower catches my attention
I will know it is you reminding me
To appreciate the simple things in life.
When the sun shining through my window awakens me
I will feel the warmth of your love.
When I hear the rain pitter patter against my window sill
I will hear your words of wisdom
And will remember what you taught me so well’
That without rain trees cannot grow
Without rain flowers cannot bloom
Without life’s challenges I cannot grow strong.
When I look out to the sea
17, My Grampie © Jessica Higgins
My love for my Grampie will always be alive.
Although he is gone, his legacy will survive.
In the things he taught me and love he would show,
I am forever grateful, and it’s to him I owe.
From the rain, to the dust, to the stars, and the sand,
You will be among me daily, holding my hand.
Your smile will always be etched in my mind.
Another Grampie like you would be impossible to find.
I know your trip of life was fulfilled and long,
For that makes this easier and helps keep me strong.
Your life was a blessing to all you knew,
But I know you’re up there now, making your big debut.
Greeting Grammy with big hug and a kiss,
I know she’s been waiting, but it’s something I’ll miss.
You know that I love you and you left too soon,
But to me, you’ll always be the guy who hung the moon.
18, Grandfather © Sensational
I’m suppressed by all childish fears.
Being afraid of the dark.
Overwhelmed with tears.
Tears caused by memories of loss.
Overcome with so much sorrow and regret.
The weight of the unerverse lies on these shoulders.
Years of hard work turned to ashes and blown away like dust.
As he lay, she watches as his body grows ever weeker, ever colder.
For she knows his time is near its end. As she prays for him to heal, that he must!
When song birds chirp their final melody, the dying light grows ever near.
Feeling of anguish, longing, and desire
Flow through her like rain falling on a fogged window pain.
Yet her fears that seemed to be fantasy,
Have now turned to reality.
As she gazes apon his smoldered body, limp and still
her eyes full of pain, anguish, and tears.
She knows his time has ended.
She lays the flowers ever so gently,
And recalls the memories of happiness and persuit.
Now they lower the cascet, comfort eachother, and embrace
That their father, brother, grandpa, and husband has gone to a better place.
19, Grandfather © Renae-RulerofHel
How could you leave me?
I was better off before
You were more than a friend,
You were my grandfather
I confided in you
My deepest darkest secrets told
Your lap, I considered my comfort zone
We laughed, we played, we cooked together
I was never the best with any other
You, you, you
Why did you decide to go?
I thought you understood me,
I feel as if you’ve deserted me
Was I not good enough
For you to want to stay
I feel like it’s my fault you left
I can’t come out of my shell
Speak to me once,
Just break the rules
I need to know you cared
I want to come visit
Since you’ve left
My heart’s a graveyard
Full of nothing
Yet into nothing it shrivels
20, He Is Gone © David Harkins
You can shed tears
that he is gone.
Or you can smile because he lived.
You can close your eyes and
pray that he will come back.
Or you can open your eyes and
see all that he has left.
Your heart can be empty because
you can’t see him.
Or you can be full of the love
that you shared,
You can turn your back on
tomorrow and live for yesterday,
Or you can be happy for tomorrow
because of yesterday.
You can remember him and
only that he is gone.
Or you can cherish his
memory and let it live on,
You can cry, close your mind,
be empty, and turn your back.
Or you can do what he would
have wanted, smile, open your
eyes, love and move on.
21, Grandpa © Shan Leamon
Goodbye, my friend.
I shall see you again
In heaven where the stars stay.
I will be there one day.
The world isn’t the same
Since the day the angels came.
You may be on a star,
But I love you wherever you are.
My stays with you are long past.
They’re right. Fun never lasts.
We worked hard in the garden and workshop.
Side-by-side, we never stopped.
I never played with a girly toy.
I was with you, a tomboy.
You changed who I am today,
A debt I can ever repay.
Know that in my heart you’re alive
Until the day, in heaven, I arrive.
You’re in the hearts of all you touch.
We still love you very much.
22, Grandfather © Jeong Ji-Yong
When grandpa
Sticks his pipe in his mouth
And goes out into the fields
Even a bad day
Beautifully clears.
When grandpa
Puts on his straw rain cape
And goes out into the fields,
Even a day in a dry spell
Has rain
23, Grandad © Fiona Bourke
Grandad,
We know you can no longer stay with us,
you fought long and hard to be with us.
We know you now watch over and protect us.
Although we cannot hear your voice or see your smiling face,
We know deep down in our hearts that you have not left us.
24, As I Look Up To The Skies Above © Unknown
As I look up to the skies above,
The stars stretch endlessly–
But somehow all those rays of light
Seem dimmer now to me.
As I watch the morning sun appear,
The shadows still don’t fade —
As if the brightest light of all
Was somehow swept away.
Though I see the branches swaying,
And watch their dancing leaves–
The echoes carried on the wind
Don’t sound the same to me.
As I listen to the morning birds
Sing softly from afar –
It seems to be a mournful tune
That echoes in my heart.
Another day has come again,
As time moves surely on –
But nothing now seems quite the same,
To know that he is gone.
The days and weeks and months ahead
Will never be the same –
Because a treasure beyond words
Can never be replaced.
The loss cannot be measured now,
The void cannot be filled –
And though someday the grief may fade,
His mark will live on still.
For even with my heavy heart,
I know that I’ve been blessed
To have been one whose life he touched
With warmth so infinite.
25, Grandfather Kept a Garden © Unknown
Our Grandfather kept a garden,
A garden of the heart;
He planted all the good things,
That gave our lives their start.
He turned us to the sunshine,
And encouraged us to dream:
Fostering and nurturing the seeds of self-esteem.
And then the winds and rain came,
He protected us enough;
But not too much because he knew
We would stand up strong and tough.
His constant good example,
Always taught us right from wrong;
Markers for our pathway that will last
a lifetime long.
We are our Grandfather’s garden,
We are his legacy.
Thank you Grandfather, we love you.
26, To Heaven You Go © Jasmine A. Hyde-Brimble
Although your dying wish
Was to see me spread my wings,
I’ll make my 18th great for you.
Let’s see what that day brings.
Your eyes were so tired,
Your mind was so lost,
We weren’t ready to lose you.
It felt such a huge loss.
But we soon had to realize
You had it worse than us.
We had to let you go.
We knew it was a must.
We love you, Granddad
And want to let you know
You mean the world to us,
And we never wanted to let you go.
We think of you every night
Before we go to bed.
You gave a good fight
But you had to rest your head.
Although you may have lost,
You did try your best.
No one can say you didn’t.
But now it’s time for you to rest.
Your wife and daughters love you dearly,
Their knight in shining armor.
Your heart was golden, clearly…
You weren’t like any other.
You’re our shooting star.
Like scattered moondust in the sky,
Our hearts had never been so broken
Until we had to say goodbye.
Your passing was so sudden.
We had no time at all.
We have our memories to look back on.
They were all a ball.
Although we cannot hear your voice
Or see your smiling face,
We feel you watch and call us.
It helps us set a base.
This isn’t goodbye,
Nor a time to be low.
Your journey starts now.
To heaven you go.
25, Granddad © Fiona Bourke
Granddad,
We know you can no longer stay with us,
you fought long and hard to be with us.
We know you now watch over and protect us.
Although we cannot hear your voice or see your smiling face,
We know deep down in our hearts that you have not left us.
Instead every day you surround us with the singing of the birds,
the rising of the sun and the falling of night.
So many broken hearts are left behind,
But in our deepest despair our greatest comfort lies knowing
that you are now at peace with the angels and God.
So as times passes our tears will dry,
our hearts will mend,
but our love for you will never end.
26, To Grandfather © Pancake Panda
As life forces us to move on
We get lost in a world of our own
Yet we have no idea of all that is there
As we wander around without care
We stumble onto something that slows us down.
In my world,
I saw you wearing a crown.
27, The Grandfather © Helbo
He was old and weak,
frail and thin
Hymning a childhood melody;
a secret within
He had lived of the land,
harvested the sea
And you would always win a smile
to remind him – to set him free
Strength had been his virtue,
he was honest and brave
Now he often thought of death,
and how he would be saved
Liberated from life,
this lingering dismay
Nothing but a fading string of memories,
echoing far away
28, I’ll Miss You © Janice J Andrade
It is not long ago
That you left my life
You flew away to heaven
To be with your children and wife
It all seems like a bad dream, one I cannot escape
It feels as if I am trapped in an unfamiliar place
I used to walk in the door and see you sitting there
A smile in your weak blue eyes
Silver in your hair
But then you started to get sick
Before I knew that was it
I tried my best not to cry
It’s too hard with a last goodbye
I sit and wonder even now
If you are up there looking down
Are you happy, are you sad?
Are you disappointed when I am bad?
I wish I could see you and have you here
My shining light to block my fear
But you are with me, this I know
For from my heart you will never go.
29, An Angel Sent To Heaven © Erika Kent
Sometimes I feel all alone
Because God sent him home.
We used to be so close,
But I miss him the most.
I used to ask him for prayer,
But now he’s not even here.
When he stepped on Heaven’s shore,
Oh, how he couldn’t love God more.
He opened the door,
He kissed the floor.
We can talk about God all day,
And the memories we have will never fade away.
I shed a tear every night,
I tell God and my Grandpa goodnight.
Life had its ups and downs,
But you turned life all around.
Cancer ate him alive as he tried to survive.
Someday we all have to die.
Now he’s a beautiful angel up in the sky.
I know you’re in a better place,
But I can’t wait till I can see your face.
I know you’re watching over me and guiding me in everything I do.
The prayers you prayed and the things you did,
I want to say thank you and I love you.
30, My Grandpa © Sarah R. Gamache
My Grandpa Marvin died today.
Oh how I wish that he could stay.
Our selfish hearts just want him here,
but we know he’s always near.
A stubborn man my Grandpa was,
but still I gave him all my love.
Now as an angel in the sky,
I watch my Grandpa Marvin fly.
A special man he is to me,
Now that he’s gone I now see,
how much my Grandpa means to me.
So as he watches from the sky,
We kiss our precious dove good-bye.
