One day (Mother Earth)
One day she will go to sleep and never wakeup
She is strong of course
But the load is too much for her to carry on
She carries a basket loaded with destruction and natural disasters
Her kids don’t see how age is affecting her
Because they are too selfish to see
They keep hurting her feelings
It is the joy of every mother to see her children growing and living in harmony
And not growing and living in agony
She has three kids
One is Power, the other Hate and last is Greed
And she is also pregnant with a bastard waiting to be conceived
Who knows what that child will grow up to be
She can’t see her hands in front of her face
Because of the heavy rain
The armpit of it all
It is as if every child she bears becomes a curse
And looking at her it seems she’s not ready to bear the loss
To save her from all the pain and stress
She might end up killing her three kids, her unborn seed and herself
You can’t bite the hands that feeds you
It will definitely come back at you.
2, Earth Day Phase © Matt Elmore
once humanity worshipped the earth
for food shelter beauty and worth
diversity bloomed within every mile
a spirit over waters of this living nerve
granted the due respect it deserved
now spinning out of control into a haze
of carbon emissions; a strip mined glaze
ripped of forests, the photosynthetic airs
a game of gratification we play in this phase
decreasing our home, a dissection of days
a return is coming back to an old respect
long lost to this orb of impending wreck
a spiritual consciousness; hope regained
sanity of reason, treasures collect
a future adorned to reject neglect
3, Ghetto Kids © France Badnoss Mkhwanazi
To all ghetto kids
Never give up
Keep pushing
God love us all
One day is One day
Things will change
It will be like you have never suffer
Always pray for better days
Being a ghetto doesn’t mean you can’t grow
Everyone on this Earth
Got a path to do
Never loose hope
I know nobody give a shit about you
But you should give a shit about yourself
Rich people are very stinch
To give but they got money for wars
Believe guys that One day is One day
Things will change
Keep your head up
Stay strong you will survive
4, Day and Night © James Stephens
When the bright eyes of the day
Open on the dusk, to see
Mist and shadow fade away
And the sun shine merrily,
Then I leave my bed and run
Out to frolic in the sun.
Through the sunny hours I play
Where the stream is wandering,
Plucking daisies by the way;
And I laugh and dance and sing,
While the birds fly here and there
Singing on the sunny air.
When the night comes, cold and slow,
And the sad moon walks the sky;
When the whispering wind says “Boh,
Little boy!” and makes me cry,
By my mother I am led
Home again and put to bed.
5, The Spinning Earth © Aileen Fisher
The earth, they say,
spins round and round.
It doesn’t look it
from the ground,
and never makes
a spinning sound.
And water never
swirls and swishes
from oceans full
of dizzy fishes,
and shelves don’t lose
their pans and dishes.
And houses don’t go whirling by,
or puppies swirl around the sky,
or robins spin instead of fly.
It may be true
What people say
about one spinning
night and day…
but I keep wondering, anyway.
6, Cosmic Lass © Manasranjan Sengupta
The earth oscillates and so
Leaving the moment behind
The earth moves round the Light
Looking her kinds, mankind !
The earth is new in every turn
Leaving unturned some kinds
Sorrows and pains, incomplete grains
All that told untold she finds !
The earth yet again bears us
The weigh unfelt slows down the flux
She smiles in spite — in greens, on waves ;
Is she a mother or a cosmic lass !
7, Earth Day © Kevin J. Ryan
Insufficiently granting the Earth
This one individual day
While roughly since its fiery birth
1642×10⁹ of them have gone this way
Is not really grasping its worth
We’ll need more than this to defray
Costs of gifts we now measure by dearth
With no conscious plan to repay
8, The Day Death Set Me Free © Rob Krabbe
I saw you today, in town, after lunch.
I wasn’t prepared for that at all.
I walked out the diner, looked up
to the sky, the deep blue of your eyes,
peeking at me through the clouds;
it was the first crisp day of a cool brisk fall.
Caught me completely off guard.
I stood there and stared, fully unaware
that the earth had stopped turning,
the wind had stopped blowing,
the traffic stopped driving,
and the town had stopped thriving.
I thought people must have noticed.
How long … how long would it be,
before the spirit of death, finally set me free?
I saw you one day in the eyes of a child,
curious and wild, gleefully hearing
me sing, some stupid ditty about
numbers and fractions when the
bell in the hall started to ring.
The teacher said, “let’s thank our special
guest, for coming to our class to play,
and teaching us some wonderful music today!”
The kids all clapped and I looked around the
room at the children so young and free.
How long … how long would it be, before
The spirit of death, finally set me free?
So, I came here today, to this beautiful place.
I haven’t been here at all since that dark, sad day.
The beautiful “cementerio de la familia Alvaro.”
I wanted you to know, that I love you, and
that will never, ever, change.
But I’ve got a chance to live on tomorrow.
To sail off in Joy, on this ocean of sorrow.
Sunrise, or storms, swells or calm seas,
whatever life brings; just tell me you’ll be
good with whatever life brings to me?
So I lay down the roses, on top of her headstone,
walked to my car and drove myself home.
A few tears, a lot of wonderful memories;
I felt her spirit going with me, and I felt her love.
I felt her blessing, as on that last day.
I felt her smile, looking down on me from above.
Today is the day, like tomorrow will be.
A long time coming, until we meet again.
The day death finally set me free.
9, Rainbow After Rain © Aida G. Roque
Rain soaked the earth, floods ruined
lives, rain clouds cleared the sky and
warm tangerine sunshine, embrace the
forlorn earth now, soaking in the warmth
sun, a heaven’s promised, after the rain.
Rainbow bloomed, in luster of fertile green
and meadows in different hues of scented
flowers. Feathered wings aviary, swing from
trees to trees. Mighty trees, with fresh dew
drifts, spraying with the cool breeze.
10, The Mountains Are A Lonely Folk © Hamlin Garland
The mountains they are silent folk,
They stand afar-alone;
And the clouds that kiss their brows at night
Hear neither sigh nor groan.
Each bears him in his ordered place
As soldiers do, and bold and high
They fold their forests round their feet
and bolster up the sky.
11, Fishes’ Evening Song © Dahlov Ipcar
Flip flop,
Flip flap,
Slip slap,
Lip lap;
Water sounds,
Soothing sounds.
We fan our fins
As we lie
Resting here
Eye to eye.
Water falls
Drop by drop,
Plip plop,
Drip drop.
Plink plunk,
Slash splish;
Fish fins fan,
Fish tails swish,
Swush, swash, swish.
This we wish …
Water cold,
Water clear,
Water smooth,
Just to soothe
Sleepy fish.
12, Mud © Polly Chase Boyden
Mud is very nice to feel
All squishy-squash between the toes!
I’d rather wade in wiggly mud
Than smell a yellow rose.
Nobody else but the rosebush knows
How nice mud feels
Between the toes.
13, Maytime Magic © Mabel Watts
By Mabel Watts
A little seed
For me to sow…
A little earth
To make it grow…
A little hole,
A little pat…
A little wish,
And that is that.
A little sun,
A little shower…
A little while,
And then, a flower!
14, Spaceship Earth © Becca
We ride this living ship
Through black of space.
Blue, green and white
We determine our place.
Our living ship is made to thrive
Positioned perfectly to keep us alive.
Let’s keep it healthy and keep it strong.
For drifting without it, we wouldn’t last long.
15, The Rain Has Silver Sandals © May Justus
The rain has silver sandals
For dancing in the spring,
And shoes with golden tassels
For summer’s frolicking.
Her winter boots have hobnails
Of ice from heel to toe,
Which now and then she changes
For moccasins of snow.
16, Free the Earth © Becca
Imaginary lines upon the earth
That define our borders and human worth,
But only found on paper maps.
We build our cages and set our traps.
All humans have a right to roam
To find a place and call it home.
Erase the lines and make it free
There’s plenty of room for both you and me!
17, Earth Day Mixup © ClassroomJr
I was telling my friend all about Earth Day
She heard me wrong and thought I said “birthday”
She said she would rush down to the mall
And buy a dollhouse or a doll
I said she shouldn’t buy all that stuff
The landfills are full of trash, enough!
Then she knew that she’d made a mistake
And said she would make a birthday cake
I cheered about that, I said “hooray!”
So that’s how we’re celebrating Earth Day
Now she’s learning about recycling trash
And not only that but she saved her cash!
18, Lessons © Lenore Hetrick
Does each small plant teach you a lesson?
Does each tree tell you a tale?
If you will but stop your game and listen,
They will speak to you without fail.
The little plant will teach you a lesson
Of the importance of very small things.
Each creature and plant has its place on earth,
Each stone and each bird that sings.
The little plant lives for but a day.
With the season’s passing it goes,
And yet it lived and served its purpose,
A purpose just nature knows.
The tree comes slowly from out the earth,
For it has long years to live.
Many decades its fresh green shade
To children the tree will give.
You may be gone while the tree grows on,
Others will enjoy its beauty.
The tree that spreads out and reaches the sky,
For such is a great tree’s duty.
That is the lesson and that is the tale
A plant and a tree will tell,
If you will but stop your hurried playing,
And listen softly and well.
19, The Earth Speaks © Lenore Hetrick
The turning earth spoke in a somber voice.
“Four seasons I give you,” its deep voice said.
“I give you spring when the lilacs bloom,
I give you autumn when the maple is red.
“Summer I give you all crowned with sunshine,
And winter of snow and icicle spears.
Four seasons I give you with all their joys!
And all their pleasures and all their fears!
“Take my four gifts and use each one,
Use each wisely, kindly and well,
So that upon the year’s last hour
A worthy record you date to tell.”
The turning earth spoke but once again.
“Four season I give you,” its voice was low.
“The gifts are yours and yours is the task
To use my gifts as best you know.”
20, Until I Saw the Sea © Lilian Moore
Until I Saw the sea
I did not know
that wind
could wrinkle water so.
I never knew
that sun
could splinter a whole sea of blue.
Nor
did I know before,
a sea breathes in and out
upon a shore.
Lilian Moore
My Friend Camilla
Before the winter
My friend Camilla
Was a squiggly wiggly
Caterpillar.
But soon she chaged her name to Chris
And turned into
A chrysalis.
In the spring she said
‘my name is Di,’
and then became
a butterfly!
21, Hiking © Lenore Hetrick
For summer fun I like to hike.
Off I hurry down the pike.
To a country road I turn,
And soon am thick in brush and fern.
Oh, the secrets that I find
If I have more than half a mind!
For winter fun I like to hike.
Yes, that’s exactly what I like.
Over the snowy hills I go,
Adventures by the dozen grow.
I explore the woods when all is still,
And I cry, “Hello!” from the top of the hill.
And what do I do in budding spring
When all the birds return to sing?
And what do I do in scarlet fall
When Jack Frost splashes paint on all?
Why, I just hurry down the pike!
I’m off, you see, for another hike.
22, When Is Earth Day? © Becca
The earth is circling out in space
Round and round it drifts in place.
We take for granted the special state
That shapes our days and defines our fate.
We never notice in our day to day
How things stay put and don’t float away.
Let’s stop and realize how lucky we are
To have this place among the stars.
Where food grows freely and there’s water to drink.
It flows from the rivers straight to our sinks.
So, for anyone who has to ask, ‘When is Earth Day?’
I think it’s easy to say that it’s each and every day!
23, Little Wind © Kate Greenaway
Little wind, blow on the hill-top,
Little wind, blow down the plain;
Little wind, blow up the sunshine,
Little wind, blow off the rain.
24, What You Can Do © ClassroomJr
When you see litter in the streets
And the air smells of pollution
When you feel like it’s all piling up
Remember there is a solution
There’s something each of us can do
To keep the rivers clean
To keep fresh the air we breathe
And keep the forests green
Help clean a beach
Or recycle bottles and cans
Learn about the problems we face
And help others understand
It doesn’t have to be a lot
If we each just do our share
So take time out on Earth Day
To show the Earth you care
25, Dancing © ANG KUEI-FEI
Wide sleeves sway.
Scents,
Sweet scents
Incessantly coming.
It is red lilies,
Lotus lilies,
Floating up,
And up,
Out of Autumn mist.
Thin clouds
Puffed,
Fluttered,
Blown on a rippling wind
Through a mountain pass.
Young willow shoots
Touching,
Brushing,
The water
Of the garden pool.
26, Silver Road © Hamish Hendry
Last night I saw a silver road
Go straight across the sea;
And quick as I raced along the Shore,
That quick road followed me.
It followed me all round the Bay,
Where small Waves danced in tune;
And at the end of the silver road,
There hung a Silver Moon.
A large round moon on a pale green sky,
With a Pathway bright and broad;
Some night I shall bring that silver moon
Across that silver road!
27, Beyond Winter © Ralph Waldo Emerson
Over the winter glaciers
I see the summer glow,
And through the wild-piled snowdrift
The warm rosebuds below.
28, The Moon © Emily Dickinson
The moon was but a chin of gold
A night or two ago,
And now she turns her perfect face
Upon the world below.
Her forehead is of amplest blond;
Her cheek like beryl stone;
Her eye unto the summer dew
The likest I have known.
Her lips of amber never part;
But what must be the smile
Upon her friend she could bestow
Were such her silver will!
And what a privilege to be
But the remotest star!
For certainly her way might pass
Beside your twinkling door.
Her bonnet is the firmament,
The universe her shoe,
The stars the trinkets at her belt,
Her dimities of blue.
29, Looking at the Moon After Rain © LI T’AI-PO
The heavy clouds are broken and blowing,
And once more I can see the wide common stretching beyond the four sides of the city.
Open the door. Half of the moon-toad is already up,
The glimmer of it is like smooth hoar-frost spreading over ten thousand li.
The river is a flat, shining chain.
The moon, rising, is a white eye to the hills;
After it has risen, it is the bright heart of the sea.
Because I love it—so—round as a fan,
I hum songs until the dawn.

I spin around the sun
