If I used everything but the names
it would mean photograph me carefully
taking my chains off at the opera,
tell the story about my boils and loans,
add me suddenly to the war budget,
put my hand over your mouth like a strong wind,
study my eyes instead of Chinese Art,
listen to my hair instead of the radio,
make your “against” against “for” and your worst
dream about Bibles and armed boys my dream,
elect me to the Presidency of Small Teeth,
cause me great accidental pain in the kitchen,
strike against what it costs to support
my wardrobe and my imaginary diseases,
put cremation on the list of possibilities,
say how easy resurrection is, how Jewish,
read me on the toilet, on airplanes, in bed,
lose me on a trip to the parental estate,
drop me at timed intervals in the caves,
call me a human footnote to the enemy’s essay,
write down SB on your list, not radishes,
be disappointed in the size of my breasts,
say my robes are ugly, my skin, they cover
a heart in a feminine chest that coughs,
lift my head from its pillow and kiss it,
say how bad these old photographs of us are,
how Christian the invention of film is.
