(I edited my title a bit now)
Having lived in quite a few countries
I’ve seen many smart cars
Fashionable fast cars
My favorite from afar
is that luxurious car
they know as limousine
Not for the purchasing
rather simply for mere gazing
B.M.W was more popular when I was very young
but even smart cars can’t take you to places too far flung
Maybe the latest car craze is the snazzy sedan
or is it the high class Bugatti?
Or with an upper-class feel
it’s the glamorous Ferrari.
And the Land Cruiser, the Land Rover
for a spectacular safari!
The nouveau rich was fast to buy a Mercedez Benz
Ostentation inevitably follows most items of luxury
Yet smart classy cars never really fascinate me
I don’t feel any low-brow riding a cab or a taxi.
Never once have I craved for show-off items of luxury
You can be great and be admired
even if like mahatma Gandhi in a dhoti.
Whether on foot or in a cab, I’m looked upon as an aristocrat
Never have I dreamt of becoming a magnate or a fat cat!
Many poets seem to eschew the rat race I feel.
Sporty sports car auction? Oh no, I’d rather slip off to the library
Since show-off wealth could never ever catch my fancy
Then comes the newest craze
the latest craze for smart phones
the newest models of mobile phones
The stylish blackberry cellphone
Touchscreens, the I-Pod, the I-Pad
And I-phones gosh IT- mad!
Bah all that gadget fad!
And yet my old fashioned Nokia doesn’t ever really bother me
coz I’d rather save for info study material
than on a costly phone waste my man’s money.
So I simply don’t feel low
or any less high-brow
if I don’t buy the latest costliest stuff you know
I never liked changing the old for the new
unless the things stopped working and were useless too.
So let the big buck tycoons monopolise each and every bonanza
and let there be nothing else on their mind
except ostentatious extravaganza
Poets like me can be content inking on nature’s wonders in all luxury
and protect instead our priceless oeuvre from the plagiarist’s robbery
If you are into scholarly pursuits, you haven’t time for any snobbery!
