The blue ornata’s spider-web
body sidles and pulses among the turning
cilia wheels of the microscopic
rotifera tilting over the feathery
fans of the splendidum slowly extending
and withdrawing
their fondling tongues
inside the body of the summer solstice
where the sun with its ragged
radiances organizes transparent
butterflies and paper kites of light
into flocks of meadow-drifting
throughout the green sea surrounding
the design
of string worms palolo
floating in the gripping and releasing
event of their own tight coils
toward a reef of chitons pulled
from their rock bases by the violent
bite and suck of a spinning
squall
curling themselves then
into their round coat-of-mail shells
as if they were each one made
by the sound of long O moaning
inside a sailor’s ancient prayer
to Mater Cara
tumbled and tumbled
by the waves beneath which the frilled
shark a singular presence in a dimension
of lesser constellations suspended
mid-sea whips with a graceful pattern
of pitiful evil
toward a nebula
of cephalopods undulating
below an arrangement of rain
shattering the evening suddenly
out of the linear into the million
falling moments
of one moment
pebbling the open plain of the sea
through which plankton ascend
like a legion of flittering spirits
or the single body of a multiple
deity swallowing stinging salt pieces
of stars
to the surface to bask
beneath the violet order
of the traveling moon touching
all points in the declaration of birth
to death
to stone embodied by shoals
of glass-threaded cod fluctuating
in their progress like schools of storm
petrels creating descent and angle
from a totally flat sky playing
a layering of flight
shadows off the eyes
of soaring dolphins breaching
with the contrapuntal rhythm of a passage
from Bach as over and within
this universe
the hand of an ecstatic
wind its fingers spread wide
with blessing moves in a seizure
of joy through every trembling spray
and pulse and skeleton forming
the reality of this whole
prolonged consummation
