Why did you wait so long
In the covert of the flesh, the painful flesh?
The deer, hidden in the leafy thicket,
Desiring of all things most the fresh
Sweet turf of the meadow, the sod
Joyous with flowering grasses, hesitates,
Fearful, unseen, to be seen
In that emptiness of light.
So did you wait, so fearful,
And so longing, hunted of God?
