There is an old story of how
a woman’s apparition haunted
a certain place, a certain time; but
the horse she strode could not be caught.
When a certain man saw her approach,
her glowing stung him, and he rode after;
but she neither stopped nor turned.
He spurred his horse; hers went no faster,
but led. He paced, he cantered,
he galloped, but she was always ahead,
her horse ambling; and she never turned;
and he never caught her, but slowed
and breathed his horse.
Another day, he met her again
and rushed after her,
but she maintained her lead
in sparkling serenity and her horse was never winded.
The man, confounded, cried,
“STOP!”
and she stopped.
“Why did you not stop before” he asked.
“Because you never asked it,” she replied.
