A year ago my ego dreamt
Of a land in the sea’s continent,
Birds flew over marshland there,
Comparing sunlight with the air,
And everywhere love sat
I lay down beside.
A week ago a woman went
Through my dreams to a green tent,
Half hallowed and half mad,
She was the dream I had,
And everywhere she wandered
I lay down beside.
A day ago a thought bent
Reflections to its own intent:
An island fell; a town fell;
And love spat out the gall,
And everywhere love spat
I lay down beside.
Tonight I dreamt a worm rent
The soil of all my continent;
I kissed the fleshy head
And found death’s other root,
And everywhere death wooed
I lay down beside.
