(from the Greek)
Wayside Hermes, this share of a fine
Bunch of grapes, this piece
Of lardy cake out of the oven, a black
Fig, an olive soft on the gums,
These slicings of a round cheese, some
Cretan corn, a heap of fine ground
Meal, then this concluding cup of wine
I dedicate to you. Allow the
Cyprian, my goddess, to enjoy them too,
And I will, I promise, offer
On the pebbly shore a white-
Footed kid to the pair of you.
To Hermes
