What rabbit leaps from that trick top-hat
Black and bottomless as fear?
Will the wonderful bunny appear
White, blue-winking, pinkly new,
Making us children again
Our happiness supreme
In colored streamers, white ice-cream?
Oh, will it be white as the wedding day,
Slim, breath like a bridal flower
Before the budget turned it sour?
White as the graduation dress,
Love the white rider
Bright on the fiery steed,
And you the white captive waiting to be freed?
Or will it be white like the hospital bed
Pain like a white Sahara thirsting to be well and green,
Or white like the fading scene
Of slobbering old age;
White as that final flung-up sheet,
White of the funeral wreath
And the black hat death?
