Impounded by the dreadful clocks
And goaded by the metronomes
Let us patrol the empty blocks
And keep the furies to their homes
And let us watch the freezing stars
Destroying darkness in the sky
While close at hand the loaded cars
Go harshly and precisely by
And let us hear the wind come up
And let us watch the moon go down
And let us kick the beggar’s cup
And hear the coins assault the town
And let us say goodnight and part
-While in the wood the vultures sing
And in the human breast the heart
Keeps balancing
