Sonnet: When I’as Just Born

Oh, when my life was in my Mother’s womb,
And Monkey-like, I swam in Amnios;
My lungs were solid; I needed no comb;
A cruel world waited to be my boss?

And so, I let a hearty cry at birth;
My lungs both sucked the polluted Earth’s air;
My cry of fright was everybody’s mirth,
The light which hit my face, I could not bear.

My body that had turned cold, was now warm;
My heart pumped blood into my vascular-tree;
I slept exhausted, dreaming of less harm,
At last, I came out of the darkness, free.

Alas! I never knew the wily world,
That madly wished for power, fame and gold!
