I could have just said,
‘A Scot knew not what a hissie was,
nor did he know
that a noop
could be rounded by a sloop’;
but I wanted to give you more:
‘A Scotsman on a trip to Australia
I met – I steeped in Burns –
who hadn’t known what a hissie was.
I found too
that he didn’t know a noop
(also spelled -ou-) .
I gave a clue:
one could be rounded by a shallop
and also by a sloop.’
