It might sound fake news to most,
but ‘eft’ means ‘convenient’;
‘eftest’ is ‘most convenient’;
‘paene’ being Latin for ‘almost’,
‘peneftest’ is ‘next-to-most-ready-to-hand’.
Perversely, my grandmother took ‘eft’ to mean ‘large’.
‘When choosing a slice of tart,
take at most the peneftest, ‘
is a tenet of hers by which I stand.
