I’d whittled a novelty to fill a bare patch between the
doodah and a whimsy, and my whatnot was looking
pretty good, but something was lacking, so I began to
carve a contrivance.
A wayfarer stopped, and looked on without comment.
‘It’s unfinished’, I explained defensively.
‘You know what you’ve got there don’t you? ’ he said.
‘A work of art? ’ I suggested.
He looked doubtful.
‘A conversation piece? ’
He shook his head.
‘Fandangle? Frippery? Foible? ’
He laughed.
‘Well what is it then? ’ I asked him, a little vexed.
He replied, ‘What you’ve got there, is a need.’
