Winter crops lay heavily
Under snow covered fields
Damp grey misty days ahead
Hard ground where nothing yields.
Winter gives over to spring pregnant
With hope, spring lambs leaping
Cattle chewing fresh spring grass
Precocious young calves bleating.
Summer sun warms gentle airs, soft
Winds drift as a cool summer breeze
Fans heated brows of farm workers in
Fields having lunch under shaded trees.
Resting until the autumn harvest
When nature’s bounty is plucked from all
Its earthly storehouses as our days shorten
And blackberries picked for the autumn ball.
