i saw her from a distance
among bar hoppers and the crowd,
flashing in and out of sight
as clouds of music and smoke
smarted both ears and eyes;
but as laughter broke the spell,
as faceless people milled around,
as i had friends to care about,
i lost her on the closing hour.
finding excuse in sips of beer,
again and again i returned
to that cold spot of night,
confronting all sounds and bouts,
unmindful of the setting stars;
ever watchful for one sweet face,
straining hard for one brief smile,
clutching fast at one hope,
a glimpse of friendship from her eyes.
night after night, slowly courage came,
then braving wars of heart and mind,
i stood up, approached near, in frenzy!
but then i saw, the more i looked
at that sweet face i had to go;
you see i hoped for friendship
but then i know, a friendly offer
is mere excuse to fall in love again,
and so i had to go.
