Inspired by the Romani song Djelem Djelem sung by the Barcelona Gipsy Balkan Orchestra. However, the narrative in my poem is very much different from that of the original song.
you travel on, you travel on,
oh beautiful Roma
with your dark eyes
under the golden sun,
beneath the sparkling stars
i’ll search for you
in meadows and streams,
i’ll follow your trails
of crushed flowers
where you stepped on
last evening
i saw you by the stream
talking with the wind,
enticing the moon,
humming to the starlit night
this early morn
your camp is gone,
no tracks to follow,
save flowers crushed
where grasses grow
i’ll travel on,
i’ll travel on,
even if you veil your face
i know i’ll recognize
those large dark eyes
i’ll travel on,
but someday i’ll come
to look for those dark eyes
where trails of flowers lie
near streams and meadows wide
