Shallow shapes, carved on stone or bronze or plaster,
Hint at shades and shadows of the world we see,
With vagrant eyes and lenses seldom clear.
Bas-relief lets the looker-on to stroll
Beyond two dimensions and the solid third
Of sculpted figurative perspectives.
A frieze of shadows can be deep enough
If art allows the vision of our minds
To roam and look beyond the optical.
